I’m already using the Toraiz midi sequencer to sequence my Prophet 12 and then sample that into the Toraiz. Works really well. There’s plenty of onboard storage so while in theory it’s a bit of an obtuse file system, I don’t think it’ll bother me much. I can see myself cleaning it up once a month or so.
Where are finding cheap units? Thanks.
There is one on ebay right now for £600, that is a steal.
A few on Reverb, tho they seem to go fast.
Ok fine no more “Miami”
But yes song arrange (scenes) mode is great and for me very intuitive also , if I understand you correctly, I also sample External sources and fly them back out for detailed editing to DAW or other software. The SP16 stems becoming my “guide”track and all other parts seem to fall into place…
I was going to get a Blackbox to pair it up but decided to go with iPad Pro a lot of amazing apps that supplement the SP’s shortcomings.
I’ve been looking at this for awhile and once again in the market for a stereo sampling groovebox type thing, but I keep coming back to all the tracks needing to be equal length. Seems like something that could have easily been remedied in firmware, right?
Had the OT but didn’t gel with it and while things like the MC-707 look interesting it would be overkill. Looks like the Blackbox and MPC Live are the two best options, and leaning towards the Blackbox for size and minimal interface.
I have the same issue, actually with any groovebox… individual track lengths, time signatures per patt, tempo per patt, scaling, swing per track etc… are just insanely vital to me in this day and age, the toraiz and the deluge should have these things standard in my opinion… but we’ve gotta do what we’ve gotta do…
-deluge owner
-wannabe toraiz owner lol
I’m torn here - I bought the DJS-1000 and really like it. It’s just set up to jam. However…I’m very interested in the SP-16, especially with the new update.
I’d love to have the 8 outs
I’d also love to get my stems ‘wrapped’ so they loop smoothly. The DJS render doesn’t wrap the stem
I’d also like 2 FX - like a delay and filter
What I’d miss on the DJS
Mutes per pattern
The master FX knob
The layout - Home screen at the top of the box versus off to the side
Hmmm…
Oh, and does the Sp-16 have a count in? The DJS does
When you extend patterns on the SP-16, does it copy the bars?
I had the SP-16 for about a year when it was released, but for some reason I didn’t take it as expected, so sold it and bought a DJS-1000 when that was released and I found it suited me way better. It’s more fluid to me and I can make more with it, ie I was regularly knocking up usually 2-4 ideas in an evening after work on the 1000 because it was so easy to work with and so naturally flowing for me. I do still hanker after an SP-16 for a more mobile tour around the house to make music approach, but i’m really happy I went for the 1000, despite the lack of support for it while the Toraiz takes a slow progression.
I think (for me at least) it’s better to get ideas down fast and revisit projects that i’m happy with to expand on things, or change a few things around, so the faster sketchpad style is what keeps me making music and not getting too hung up on extra features.
You know, I’ve always wanted to go to Miami, so I don’t mind on topic tho, yep, the fact that it samples is vital to me and damn, the stuff that goes into it comes out sounding ever so slightly better. I recorded a four bar loop from my Prophet 12, used the automatic slice function and banged away on the pads. Within a minute, that loop had become something completely different, sounding great at the same time.
I’m gonna try hardwired resampling next. Spit something out from one of the Toraiz outs, 3 and 4 maybe, into a Blooper and back into Toraiz line in, see if that works without feedback.
I’ve been deep into the Deluge for a couple of weeks now, for various reasons, and the SP-16 is like the anti-Deluge. You get results very quickly, they sound great without no effort from your side, and once you’ve made your pattern and tweaked it some with fx and lfo and something else maybe, you’re done. For the moment, I find it refreshing that I can’t even reach for different time signatures, polyrythms, ten minute stems but just unleash myself on the pads and have something working within a minute or so.
It remains to be seen if my idea of complexity was just something I told myself and didn’t ever really need, and that within a confined structure, I actually work better than an open-ended one.
Damn you guys are really praising the SP-16 hard ^^
Well, I’m still honeymooning let’s see where we’re at in a week or so.
Ahh Miami …
Yes for me sampling is core, I thought of going with a portable setup like @echo_opera with an H6 but with multiple synths I went with the MOTU 828ES allows me to connect and route OT, SP-16, A4 and IPad Pro. I doesn’t make sense to have the outputs and not use them. I am thinking of maybe something like the Specular Tempus or Seymour Duncan Dark Sun on the outputs of the SP16 for some “extra special sauce” Routing between all connected devices
I totally agree I love what I come up with very little effort I don’t care much for complexity in my opinion music should flow and not be this show of technical prowess
YES !!!
yes and yes!
the DJS has that?? it’s weird that the devices are apparently able to share projects but they still have so many differences in the software.
What’s in the new update that has you interested?
2 fx slots
Also having 2 FX will let you have an EQ+ dynamics or whatever order you want. So technically you can set the mixer levels then do EQ corrections + compression per each channel. Your own mini console.
I really wonder if they used some nice AD/DA conversion that’s used on their more expensive mixers that’s why the output stage sounds that good.
can you record tweaking of the Dave Smith filters into the sequencer in either live recording mode or step mode?
