Pioneer Toraiz SP-16

uh oh thems is fightin words right there… ok how is it better than Elektron P.Locks definitely intrigued?

The layout’s more clear  functionally, they’re the same. But I just get a better idea of what’s going on here.

but the sp doesn’t have fill capability right?

That’s right, no conditionals at all. If Pioneer ever did another update, I’d expect conditionals to be one of the most requested features they’d never implement. It doesn’t feel like that kind of instrument.

Time signatures and polyrythms seem more likely, as well as streaming samples from the USB stick.

But really, it does feel like they’re done with this one. I don’t mind. It’s cool as is.

@ddiamond84 I’ve been eyeing that too, but between the Blooper and the Mood, texture’s not special enough to want me trade my (youngest child’s) kidney (mine’s gone).

Those are both loopers or samplers, kind of tho, so there’s a difference there, I suppose.

When you sample something, I think pressing the knob down previews it.

Pattern + Track will delete the trigs, the track. Sample stays.

I have to make a decision this week on whether to keep the SP or DJS. Good choices to have for sure. Very grateful.

I’m finding I don’t use the SP FX as much as I thought. But I will say, the dual slots come in super handy. Like EQing a sample, then running it through a delay.

I am using the multi outs in the SP. a lot.

The SP is smaller and fits on my desk. The DJS is next to my turntables and XDJs. So the SP feels like a piece of studio equipment rather than DJ equipment.

The DJS is way more intuitive, quicker, and sounds more inspiring than the SP though…

Long hold of slice and scale takes you to the slice and scale pages. Unlike the SP which are a few extra menus in.

When previewing samples to load, the DJS actually stops playing the sample when you click on a folder. On the SP, I have to turn preview on and off.

As myself and others have pointed out. The DJS sounds bigger, out the box. There’s no volume knob. It’s made to be played in a club right away.

This is more inspiring than one would think

What would you pick if they were both the same price ?

Lovely. Thank you for saying. That really opens up things for me. Appreciate it.

I don’t know man. I’d keep both if I could afford it. I’m leaning towards keeping the SP-16. It’s super versatile. more versatile than the DJS.

But there really is something to be said about how inspiring the sound quality is out of the DJS. With the right level setting, you can record your jam out of the DJS as a 2-track and I’d bet it was close to release ready.

Wow the sound quality of the DJS must really be something, because the SP16 already sounds really great! I read somewhere that they used Burr Brown converters on the SP16, which is already really nice. Curious to know & hear what the DJS sounds like in comparison

A clip from something I’m working on with the Toraiz now. It’s a bit overloaded but the funk is there. And slightly abrupt ending, but it is what it is so far

Thank you @DonovanDwyer and @muzka for taking the time to listen and for saying

The whole thing is a bit over-processed. With two fx slots per track and a master, one needs to be responsible with the fx. Which I wasn’t, on this one.

I’m also struggling with the compressor. I can’t get it quite to where I want it and turning it off and just running the SP-16 through my SSL SiX yields immediately better results with no effort. That has got to be user error from my end, though, I’m sure the compressor is quite capable and I’ve never learned to use one properly anyway.

If they release a 1.70 firmware upgrade (they probably don’t …)
What you would like they bring on the table ?

My answer :
More Reverb type to choose as master fx
Ping Pong Delay and all the FX list they shown at Musikmesse Frankfurt (APRIL 2016)
And I’m good with the SP16 for years :
(Conditional or chance parameter would be amazing on trigs : cherry on cake)

Loops that repeat without trigs - trig a loop and then switch to pattern where you let it run but don’t retrig it. However long or short it is, it will repeat itself independently of whatever else the sequencer is doing. Take away the time stretch, and it will do so in its original tempo, which can be even more funky.

Try it in arrangement mode----trigger a loop on pattern 1 and switch to a blank pattern pattern 2 and leave it running -the loop will play for ever up to sample length of 64 seconds.
