Possible to set MIDI CC of all 16 encoders for a MIDI Track?

Okay, so this may be kind of confusing to understand what I want to do, but I’ll do my best to explain.

I know you can create custom MIDI EXT Slots and use all 16 encoders with whatever CC message you’d like to send. This is great for live playing as you have great control over whatever external instrument you’re controlling, BUT you can’t seem to record what you’re playing in this mode into Digitone’s sequencer.

I also know that you can change the USER ASSIGN CC messages for the Control Knobs, but that only seems to be when using the internal sounds.

When in MIDI mode, I can set the MIDI CC for the DATA KNOBS but it seems like the CONTROL KNOBS are set to a factory default.

What I want to do is assign CC messages to each of the 16 encoders (CONTROL & DATA KNOBS) but while using any of the MIDI T1-T4. This way I can control many more knobs on external gear and at the same time record it into the Digitone’s sequencer.

Is there any way to change the CC of the CONTROL KNOBS while using one of the four MIDI tracks? I feel like this a huge miss if so. Seems like it should be a no brainer but I’m either missing it completely or it’s just not available.

The manual (page 26) says that the CONTROL knobs control the CCs set up in VAL1 to VAL8 for the MIDI track. If that’s not the case in practice, then it may be a bug.

I think we’re discussing the DNK - the additional knobs would likely (and rightly) only be for internal synthesis imo - the value transmitted would correspond to the message related to the underlying parameter in that case. - I may be wrong, it’d be simple to open up the manual and see what is part of the MIDI track - I very much doubt (for compatibility) it would ever do as you say you want - but maybe it does and my ideas on it are flawed, though that would be a surprise

it seems logically configured to me

it would’ve been clearer to refer to encoders A-H and 1-8 rather than control and data

there’s only 8 user assignable CCs on a MIDI track

Right, sorry. I’m having problems trying to explain it.

Yes, it is in regards to the Digitone Keys.

In EXT SETUP you can setup all 16 encoders to different controllable CC messages + have 8 different slots for different setups or different gear. It’s super easy to set that up + super fun.

When using MIDI T1-T4 you can only assign the 8 DATA KNOBS. Seems like they could easily let users assign the other 8 CONTROL KNOBS.

Right now, if you assign CC to the DATA KNOBS for your MIDI T1-T4, the CONTROL KNOBS stay at a their default settings, which make no sense. They should either A) change to the same CC as the DATA KNOBS, or B) let users change the CC for CONTROL KNOBS like you would when creating a MIDI EXT SLOT. Seems a little silly that you’re allowed to change it in one instance but not another.

As I wrote previously, the manual says that this is the intended behaviour. If it’s not happening, it may be a bug. I recommend that you make a support ticket on Elektron’s website.

That would be a feature request to email to feature-request@elektron.se

Yes, I understand that part. Unfortunately that is the USER ASSIGN mode that allows you to change the CONTROL KNOBS and I believe that is intended only for internal control only. Is that correct?

I just find it weird that you can change the CONTROL KNOBS’ CC to whatever you’d like when in EXT SETUP, but you can’t do that while on any of the MIDI T1-T4. I can only seem to update the CC to the DATA KNOBS.

Oh well. Guess I’ll send over a feature request. Just wanted to be sure it wasn’t there in some shortcut or I missed it in the manual.

Thanks for your help.

This is an older post, but I found it because I’m trying to assign my Digitone Keys CONTROL knobs to control the 1-8 CC values. But as you mentioned in the post, the page to assign CONTROL knobs to CC values does not appear to be implemented when the MIDI button is lit. Did you ever figure out a way to do it? (The manual definitely says " On a MIDI track, the CONTROL knobs control the VAL1–VAL8 parameters" but that doesn’t seem to be the case.)

Sorry, I didn’t. Just decided to use as-is.

Well this is a bummer :frowning: I was going to get a DNK so I could assign the extra 8 encoders to CCs (the ones above the keyboard). If that’s not possible, then I’ll stick with the regular DN (which I already have).

To add a clarification now that I have a DNK. For what I want to do it was very easy to use the encoders for CCs. There’s even a dedicated button to change the keyboard into that mode.
