Question Re Octa + DN: Sequencing MIDI from Octa but P-locks in DN

Howdy, Im excited bc Ive ordered a DN after being head over heels for the Octa for a long time… I was thinking of how I plan to sequence them together to make songs out of pattern chains…

My question regards how I want to do it: I love Octa’s Midi Sequencer and Im thinking of possibly sending note data from it to DN but I also know that I want to utilize the P-lock capability of the DN for FM insanity… if I create a pattern in the sequencer of the DN that uses Plocks to sequence FM or other Synth settings (SO this example pattern essentially is NOTHING BUT P-locks) and then send Midi note/Vel/Length data from the Octa will the P-locks be applied to the DN sounds in sequence with the Midi sequencer on the Octa? I realize I can do some form of this using CC data from the Octa, which I def aim to work with in some capacity, but I figured P-locks will give me more direct and powerful control of DN… otherwise I may consider just using the DN sequencer for all of the note sequencing as well as P-locks and use the Octa sequencer for my sample/drum tracks in simultaneous patterns…

So yeah: Will my first proposed use work? Any thoughts on pitfalls I might run into and how to get around them or how I might rethink this approach by doing something else? Thanks for yr answers in advance…

Don’t have a DN but on the AR incoming midi overrides sequencer data, if a midi note lands on the same step as an AR step with locks, the midi note is played without the locks. You can do somethings with micro timing the steps so they don’t hit at the same time.

I use the internal sequencer on each as that’s how you get the most out of em, but I occasionally send midi tracks to the AR for variations. You can mute the AR track and play just the midi, mute the midi track and play just the internal sequencer, or with both going you get a mash up of the two, which often for me turns out pretty awesome…

Hi Mike, ok thanks for that info, it sounds like a) Elektron are planning for folks sending MIDI while notes are playing on the DN sequencer so it sounds like I just need to get my hands on it and work on using the space between/the combination of these two sequencers to good use (for example just like you say, adding midi data where it makes things better, not wear it ‘overwhelms’ the DN info…great idea) and b) you and I are thinking similarly, both sequencers seem to have positives, they should join forces!
