Rytm, Logic, and tempo changes issue. Help appreciated!

Hi there,

I have the Rytm 2 connected to Logic via usb into an audio interface.

This setup, with Overdbridge, has been working well since I got it running but now that I have a new series of compositions that feature lots of tempo changes (by chaining different patterns in Rytm, each pattern following a tempo within polyrhythmic ratios with each other) I have no clue on how to make Logic, when recording the piece, follow those tempo changes that come from the drum machine, because once the machine is plugged into Logic, Logic’s tempo is the master tempo and the pattern changes in the machine do not change tempo as programmed, they keep the original tempo set up in Logic.

This is probably an easy fix but I’ve been digging in the manual and in this forum and could not find an answer.

Is anyone able to give me a hand with this? I’m very frustrated.

Thanks very much!

“Logic Pro can send MIDI Clock signals to synchronize external devices.

Logic Pro can not receive MIDI Clock synchronization signals.”

-Logic Pro User Guide

I’m no expert, but given this info, my reluctant decision was to write all the tempo changes into Logic’s timeline in advance of recording, when I was facing the situation you are (minus Overbridge, which I haven’t tried). (Obviously not an adequate solution if you don’t know in advance exactly when you are going to switch patterns/tempos.)

However, the Logic documentation linked above does describe some other sync methods, so perhaps there are better solutions to be found there; honestly it doesn’t look very promising, but I haven’t had time to investigate yet.

Oh yeah, one other thing—I’ve been meaning to learn about Logic’s Smart Tempo—that might be worth a look.

“With Smart Tempo in Logic Pro 10.4, record a performance without the metronome and have Logic Pro adapt the project tempo to match the tempo of the recording”

Thank you very much for your help @whim

Mapping out the tempos in Logic is far from ideal because these pieces of music are modular and quite flexible when performing them, so I will keep digging, starting with these links you shared. Thank you!

just reporting back after doing some reading on this topic: it seems that Logic does not receive clock anymore, it used to, but not anymore. Only MTC. VERY disappointing. Basically, confirming what @whim shared.

Does anyone have experience doing this in Ableton Live?

You could always use an adapter to convert.

Sorry for the delay, I didn’t get a notification of your response. I’m pretty new to MIDI, could you please elaborate on the adapter idea? What kind?

Thanks!

No sweat.
Something like this:
JL Cooper Electronics PPS-100 MIDI-SMPTE Synchronizer/Event | Reverb

I believe roland makes a box as well…
Good luck!

…check for logics master tempo automation lane…to find where u also add new instrument/audio/drummer tracks to the arranger…pops up a dedicated section for overall track arrangement signatures like embedded movies, scale/chord infos arrangement section names…there u can also tell logic when and where to jump to various tempis or climbs and falls in various tempo ramps and curves…

SOLVED!

Thanks to Patrik from Elektron for helping me solve this.

EASY: to do this, we will need to disable Overbridge sync. In the Analog Rytm plugin, set the Sync option to NO SYNC. That’s it! I couldn’t believe I had missed that.

We can also record via the AUDIO CAPTURE functionality in the Analog Rytm standalone plugin, and then drag and drop the audio to the Logic project, but i haven’t tried that yet. Not sure it multitracks that way.

I wanted to share that info here for future searches. :+1:
