You hit the nail on the head, I think - it’s ideal for the person who wants to be the drummer in an electronic act where people maybe share MIDI clock but each looks after their own instrument, or for the pop/rock outfit that wants electronic drums but with amplified instruments and vocals. It really is a great pleasure to play on, I think it has a great sound engine, and a lot of design issues don’t matter for those contexts.
It’s just that I have other things I want to do with a drum machine, and unfortunately don’t have enough cash and space to keep the Tempest around as fun alternative device ¯(°_o)/¯
having used all 3 of these drum machines (owning the tanzbar and tempest), I would say they are all excellent boxes in their own right.
The Tanzbar sounds really lush and if it’s a straight up analogue drum machine you want (nothing more), then that would be my first choice. In fact it probably has my favourite handclaps I’ve ever heard!
My friend has the Rytm and it is insane, I can see the potential in it, however like with most elektron boxes it is has the super tight control, which after many years owning all their various boxes for me doesn’t suit my particular playing style (although I still use the Octatrack).
So I ended up back with a Tempest, it just sounds plain raw and a bit unwieldy, which I like… Definitely funky! The sequencer on the Tempest is great, I find it more instant than the others, but with much less post-editing control than the Rytm… if that makes sense!
So yeah, buy them all duh!
Someone’s offering to trade me their alpha base jomox for my Tanzbar 1. I’m tempted!
Music is totally just a fun hobby for jamming for me. Anyone own both and have thoughts? The alpha base sounds incredible on videos and looks a little cryptic to play like the tanzbar was!
Without cash on top? If not I’d do that deal, not least because the Jomox more up my street sonically… But that Tanzbar clap is to die for.
Yeah the tanzbar clap is great! I have the lite and maus, the maus might be my favorite of the 3, thought the tanzbar 2 was incredible, just too buggy.
It’s no cash on top, just a one for one trade.
