Saving a reworked pattern permanently

Can anyone please clarify as I keep getting into a fuffle with the following, it’s just doesn’t seem to compute in my head:

If I load up a pattern (say A2) , and I begin to mess with it , how do I save the messed up version to A3? Do I use temporary save and copy or something? Copy it to A3 before I play with it ? I keep inadvertently over saving onto the original and loose it. ( Did this with the digitakt when I had it also) . I just need to get it fixed in my head.

after you rework the pattern
copy the pattern to the next pattern location
then save the project

Yeah, thanks,
I just tried it.
Then I went back to the original pattern and did the button combo for reload pattern and it asks if I want to reload pattern from project. It was just the last button pressed that were doing my head in . Cheers for reply
