One thing I wish the P12 desktop module had, that the P12 KB (and the Pro 2) has is the pair of touch sliders. They’re like 2nd and 3rd mod wheels. So important for playing the thing and getting some added enjoyment out of it.
The pad on the Modwave brings some of that control, but the physics def takes it over the top.
Bit strange that there isn’t a comparison out there, considering that they both have a similar hybrid design. Seems most people compare the Peak/Summit with the Hydrasynth instead. In general I see very little talk about the Prophet 12. There isn’t even a Sonicstate review of it from back when it released!
Different, not equal. And I don’t like the overall sound of the Summit - it’s missing something, to me - compared to the P12, the Summit sounds like shiny plastic - the sort of plastic that might be half-decent now, but in a few years it’ll look cheap and dingy. Compared to the much more organic sound of the P12, which ages much more pleasantly to my ears.
I feel like the Summit’s sonic signature is aimed at modern electronic music, and as a result I think it ends up sounding too much like the VSTs I already use. A very nice bread and butter type sound, but it hasn’t really surprised me in any of the demos I’ve heard.
True, and along those lines I like what my Nord Lead 3 does better than what I’ve heard (so far) from the Summit. And I don’t think either of them really step close to what the P12 is capable of in terms of texture, evolution, or organic “life-form-like” qualities. Sure there’s overlap, they’re all FM-capable subtractive architectures with varying but complex modulation and characterful filter arrangements, but the NL3 and Peak/Summit have a lot more in common than they do with the P12.
Honestly, I’ve always wanted a P12 module, and still do. Although an updated version would be nice, I do spend most of my time trying to find ways of making synths sound dusty and lo-fi. Apparently, this is the P12’s forté.
My curiosity has been peaked, I’m looking to take my Digitone out of rotation for a while to get a different flavour poly and this is one of the candidates. Really like the sound from what I’ve heard of it so far. There’s a used one for sale locally but at €1350 I’m finding it hard to justify. Peak is a fair bit cheaper…
Not too bad when you realise it’s bitimbral, with separate stereo outs for both layers. Just tell yourself you’re buying 2 Peaks with a slightly lower voice count (6 instead of 8) for the price of a Peak and its metal stand.
Just want to say that I find it really cool that the sound of the P12 conjured up EXACTLY the same kind of mental image for me. Like a dusty attic full of toy instruments, dust particles visibly floating around in the beams of sunlight.
