Software for creating music-responsive animations

Hi,

Is there any PC software for creating video animations that respond to the music? Something like Critter & Guitari’s Eyesy?

Maybe Visual Synthesizer from Imaginando is interesting for you:

I made some with processing: https://github.com/JanBurp/AudioReactiveVideo

Max/MSP can do that sort of thing too

Touch designer is pretty great, I like that you can give it a single audio file and set up filters to devide up the spectrum and then use that to control things in various ways.

Look into Resolume. Very powerful. This is what I use.

Blender is another option. It natively can convert audio signals to automation curves that can be applied to any aspect of your project, and there’s also MIDI plugins that work pretty well in real-time.

Resolume all the way

Resolume is great with pre-recorded video samples, I actually use it for long VJ sessions; if you really want to dig into video synthesis you might look for VVVV software which is free for non-commercial purposes; don’t know much about other softwares but some VJ mates have been using Touchdesigner and even Puredata and got great results. I had personally lot of fun with VVVV and was able to make great responsive visual sets for electronic music; thought the learning curve could be harder than Resolume…

After playing around with the Imaginando app on iPad, it seems to hit a sweet spot between some lower end canned visualizers and high-end complex VJ software that I don’t have the time and inclination to configure and control. I used to integrate a laptop and a fairly complex synced customized VJ system with my live music, and I spent WAY too much time planning and executing the video show part for my taste.

But with this solution, it might be some easy fun to dedicate a Digitakt MIDI track + audio output to controlling this for some live video madness that syncs with the music. Even for straight up DJ sets, I could use this to add to the vibe without much fuss.

I’m glad this came up! I’m about to invest in some software for my next couple projects.

It indeed looks like a good mix between getting started immediately without much fuss while having enough headroom to get more complex down the road. I grabbed both the iPad as well as Mac version while they were on sale.

A lot of people investing into more complex VJ systems also need to invest a good amount of time to get familiar with it which means less time for music making. And when you set everything up and need to do some trouble shooting things can get very stressful very quickly. Live business is quite unforgiving in this regard.

https://astrofox.io/ is free (open source) and pretty easy to use, you can get something up and running really quickly, but I found the number of built-in FX and stuff a bit limiting, though that might be down to me more than the software

Not software (runs in browser), but this is pretty cool and free:

Thanks everyone for the great feedback! Some of the recommendations are way more complex than I need, but that’s my fault for not being clear on what I was looking for.

For now I just used an app I found that generates some pretty cool visuals and even allows for “performing” the animations and recording, I’ll leave the link here in case someone else is looking for the same thing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MKGames.Vythm

Here’s what I came up with after playing around with the app for a few minutes:

I was playing with the iOS version on my iPad.

A little different flavor than the Imaginando app but I like it.

Sometimes I do longer rave-like dance parties, often for a burner crowd, and I think the visuals from Vythm will really work well for that. I like it that I CAN control it via MIDI if I want, but I also like the randomization features that can be set on audio-driven autopilot for almost infinite variety of trippy visuals. Maybe I’ll set up a couple of easy MIDI triggers, like a random “next patch” switch I can time with drops or other obvious musical cues, or be able to select high intensity vs low intensity visuals to match the mood.

Nice to have a couple of “easy” options here.
