Hi,
I am having problems with syncing the followin setup:
Ableton live for recording internal sounds of my analog 4 using overbridge, sounds triggered by the a4 in my modular system which are coming into ableton using a fireface 802, more modular sounds which are triggered using cv out of my mpc one which is synced to ableton using link.
Sounds coming from the a4 into live do not play in sync when compared to sounds coming in from overbridge. There are no plugins in the channels or on the master. There are syncing issues when listening to the external sounds using direct monitoring of my audio interface compared to the sounds of overbridge as well as when listening to the overbridge sounds and tve others within live.
When triggering with the mpc I am getting bad sync as well but with another timing.
Using midi clock and recording everything through my mixer works really well.
The offset is maybe 5-10 ms but that is too much when it comes to percussive material. I must be doing something wrong. Is there a good tutorial on how to set everything up? Link as well as overbridge claim to be very exact and the fireface is a decent interface. I am not using usb hibs for the interface or the a4.
IMO the setup maybe too complex with its different lines of synchronization.
If I may make a suggestion. Use a stable clock, midi-clock, which definitely will be neither the computer nor the MPC (which is nothing but a computer again). I would recommend something like the Midi-Clock or Mutli-Clock by E-RM
But using a multiclock would mean syncing to midiclock or would you recommen keeping the a4 in sync using overvridge and sync everything else to midiclock?
When syncin everything to the mpc it works quite well but just when taking the analogue signal of the a4 and I would like to grab the digital streams of the a4.
I can only talk about my own experience. Since PC and Mac do not run a “real-time” OS, timing may always become an issue. Sometimes it may work fine, sometime it may drive us crazy … it depends on a couple of things …
To be safe, I would always prefer to have only one rock solid master clock, which is sending the sync signal to all units directly and to have no computer device in-between the master clock and a unit, which shall be synced reliably.
If the master-clock provides an analog clock output for modular equipment, I would prefer to connect this output to the modular, if the modular has no midi-to-clock interface.
I know that this is a kind of radical approach, but almost fail safe. There is nothing wrong to deviate from this, as long as it works
Hi, thanks for your answer.
I am kind of glad to hear this as I tried so many things and ran into sync issues every time. Exactly as you describe, sometimes great and the suddenly everything is messed up.
As I think spending 500 Euro for a multiclock is just too much I decided to give an arduino solution a go, if this doesn’t work maybe there is something fpga based?
Until then I will stick to slving everything to my mpc I think
In my setup with 2 elektrons, mpc live, ableton and quite a few other boxes I am syncing the mpc an ableton with ableton link and all other gear gets clock from the mpc. Works like A charm for me. Overbridge is not working together with this setup for me as well. So what I do is I record everything in midi without OB.
When I got my song ready I record all in audio in Ableton except for the elektron boxes. Then as I last step I connect only the elektron boxes with OB to ableton to get all stems out of the elektrons. And that works perfectly. It does add an extra step for recording the elektrons. But no midi sync issues anymore and personally I only need OB when tracking my somg. When writing my song I am perfectly fine using the stereo out of the Elektrons and just use midi.
This way will save you the 500 for an external clock…
Without overbridge I dont have any issues. Modded my a4 for 4 external outs so tracking does work. I was just hoping for a way to use overbridge and free up some channels on my mixer.
