Teenage Engineering TP-7 Tape recorder

Probably, but it would be nice to live in a world where marketing tim doesnt assume anything, and they just say what they actually are salling to us. There would be less confused people around… Generally speaking.

Curious what TE releases via firmware upgrades. They will likely roll out additional functionality as they did for the TX-6.

Incredible seeing how much energy is expended trolling a TE product because of its price (again).

If its not for “you”, prob easier to just ignore it? complaining about an item you haven’t even seen/held in the flesh is such a waste of energy :sweat_smile:

I think its visually a stunning design and am curious to play with it before drawing speculative conclusions.

Not a TE fanboy but happy owner of an OG OP1 and TX-6 and love them both. Price is subjective….

Feel free to ask any questions or roast me. Been beta testing this device. as always I understand the price critique and general meme fest, as it should be with new TE products.

I am not that well versed in the realm of mic quality to discern whether it has a great internal mic or not. As far as I can tell, it’s OK at best.

The most stupid/fun I’ve had with this item is placing objects on the disc while playing back recordings to get warble sounds.

BTW the recording isn’t affected by the wheel when recording, only when doing a full stop on the wheel. And it’s very “scratchable”

The coolest feature imo is the TX-6 integration.
Using TX-6 in/out USB setting you can record 6 stereo tracks from TX-6 into TP-7 and then play the recordings back via TX-6 and have each track be affected by EQ, Comp, faders etc.
This means that I can record performances onto TP-7 and take just TP-7 and TX-6 and perform with just that, muting fading etc.

First on my wish list is looping recordings. I would love to be able to use TP-7 as a device looping field recordings or ambient synth sounds.

This would be fun to give to a cat.

What’s the BTLE MIDI for?

TE have every right to make very expensive audio gear (as do Moog and Sequential etc, its nothing new) I just personally think the the devices are not very practical as an ‘interconnecting’ suite of ‘field’ devices irrespective of the cost and if you real wanted to record ‘in the field’ there are far, far better solutions (that just happen to cost a fraction of what TE charges). If your not ‘in the field’ then these very small rechargeable devices also don’t make a lot of sense to me (especially in my Studio) but I did love the OG OP-1…its just hit and miss for me with TE.

this is dissapointing but understandable since it is a standard recorder first, but arming the op-1 tape and recording in reverse or manually “printing” the audio by turning the blue knob back and forth are some of the features which gave the tape so much experiemental depth.

as much as i like the TP-7, those features aswell as the lack of looping make me think I should wait for firmware updates until i consider purchasing.

So you cant record any scratching or slowing down effects? Seems like they missed a trick there?

Watching the videos of people using it I think that this is probably the biggest design issue for me. I really love the industrial design and they’ve clearly thought a lot about how tactile it is - and it’s gorgeous, but having the rocker on one side like that isn’t ideal. Although it’s common for handheld devices to have controls on one side it’s also common for them to be viable to be used both left and right handed even if differently. For a company that cares so much about UX I consider that a bit of a gaff personally. I’d have been keen to make it more universal in that regard. Tbh the rocker is probably the strangest part of the design, I think it’s the part that is most likely to get damaged too.

I actually thought this thread wasn’t too bad for that. I think it helps this thing seems so quirky and flexible.

While the TX6 is cool it seems artificially expensive because of the form factor. The mic also has some unique features but their utility is fairly niche. This thing for what it is the form factor just makes sense. I’m not so much a fan of TE as I am weirdly unique pieces of gear, it’s a little frustrating it goes with an expensive design aesthetic but whatever.

Is the built in mike stereo? I cant help but feel a hand held recording device should be all about the mike quality?

all sources point to it being mono and medicore at best.

This is another disappointing area although it immediately becomes obvious why when you consider they are also trying to sell the CM-15.

But if you are in the ‘field’ are you going to hold 2 devices connected by a cable?

Yes sadly it seems so far that the field recorder is probably about the devices 3rd priority behind memos and audio input recording (which kind of overlaps with the TX-6 recording function anyhow).

This absolutely isn’t a field recorder, I mean you could use it for that, but it would just be a joke, especially with that other mono mic they’re selling.

It’s a coffee shop table/studio tool.

I have always had appreciation for Sony’s sleek slim designs since the late 80s ( mostly their walkman and discern…except for their bulky yellow walkman
