Look forward to see some actual videos of this and the mic. Guess next day or so will be a fair few floating around
Love TE, and really enjoy my OP-1F and TX-6 (even the oft complained about OP-Z) because they serve a clear function, distinct from the rest of my setup, and their premium is worth it to me based on the whole of each being greater than the sum of their parts — with this thing (less the new mic, tho still) it really feels like a solution searching for a problem.
They can do what they want, I’m not like personally affronted, I just enjoy when TE spends their time making things that are well designed and useful, and justify the price by uniqueness and portable utility — I don’t see how the new mic is 5x better than a Tula (also TE designed) and I haven’t the slightest how someone could justify the value of this TP-7
picture yourself in an interview situation. the reel on the TP–7 is spinning slowly, the bright red record lamp is lit. both the reel and the lamp indicates that a recording is taking place. the interview is going quite well. the situation gets heated, you’re suddenly asked some personal questions. in that moment, you gently place a finger on the reel and pause the recording, allowing you to continue the interview
‘off the record’.
Give me strength
I do actually like the design of this, but it misses for me on the important requirements for a field recorder. It should either be very rugged and robust if it’s to be expensive, or very cheap and replaceable, for when I inevitably drop it, submerge it or lose it (I’m on my third Zoom H2n through no fault of their own!).
In most cases “field” refers to a nice coffee shop.
They master the marketing and the design.
It would have made me more interested if it was real tape with a speed control motor to record at different speed and potentially backwards.
I like teenage engineering, I own a op-1 field and a OP-Z, both are fun and inspiring for music making. I also could find a use for the mixer and even the mic (if it sounds good) but what the heck does this add to the field system for musicians particularly? I can just record onto the op1 or the mixer, or better yet buy an iPad with logic. It’s pretty but makes no sense. What am I missing?
If only it was something like this, but in the TP-7 form factor.
I mean I was certainly confused if one was supposed to use the OP1 Field to make beats or grow beets.
The spinning platter while recording is also probably great for those users who feel the need to obsessively check and recheck a device is actually recording.
Honestly I think the TP7 looks pretty cool. It may be expensive but it’s unique for sure (maybe too unique). Sure you can do a good part of its functionality with a phone, but the rest no chance without faff.
I just read the user guide and it answers a lot of questions.
I really like the customisable analog i/o. I like it mixes analog and digital recording. I like it does multitrack recording and playback via the analog i/o. I like it has BLE midi but no idea what it’s supposed to be used for haha.
It looks like you can digitally record 12 mono sources via usb-c from the TX6. It doesn’t look much like it can do 6 mono sources via the analog i/o.
I like the one touch memo, music player and storage drive functionality.
If you can see yourself using 80% of the functions regularly then it’s probably not unreasonable value.
I think at this moment TE is focused on making lusty objects that one can somewhat justify by saying it will make my podcasts interviews or journalistic skills so much more with the TP-7 than without It’s more emotive and they know darn well how human psy can be a great marketing strategy. For example: I’m trying to see how the TP-7 can fit into my setup. I mean. Do I need to justify it???
It definitely needs an iPhone-ish case to cover it’s beautiful design
Frivolous cash would be fun to have tho.
I thought my PCM D100 was expensive. I don’t need any of the Field stuff but I really want it. I’ll end buying them at some point. I have the OP1 Field and absolutely love it. Value wise you can do so much more with the money when it comes to gear, but if you ask me is it worth the money? Absolutely! TE fills my Apple needs that I’ve been missing for years now.
Another TE product for hipsters and youtubers…
I think it’s great. I have been wishing for years for a digital recorder that’s as fast and direct to use as a tape dictaphone.
I won’t be buying it, but the idea that it does not fulfill a need is a bit silly. It just might not be your need.
OBX8 is almost five grand.
Relatively expensive too.
Jesper?
Is that you?
