Hi there,
Still fresh to the M:S and to be honest, using midi in general, especially to trigger or control other instruments. Thankfully, I was able to at least get both my microfreak and M:S to sync tempo, thanks to this forum! However, I am wanting to trigger a sequence in the microfreak, with the M:S timeline. How do I go about doing that? Ultimately, I want the M:S to be the brains, primary control. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your patience, I love this device, and just want to learn it, and use it to it’s full potential.
I don’t own either instrument but, as far as I know, that’s not possible in the way that you describe. The M:S can send MIDI Note messages and MIDI Program Change messages from its sequencer, but neither of these can control the Microfreak’s sequencer.
It seems that you have the M:S and the Microfreak running in synchronization, which is a great start. The other thing that you can do is to use the M:S’s sequencer to sequence notes on the Microfreak. You may or may not find this an improvement on syncing the two sequencers.
To sequence from the M:S, you need to know the MIDI Input channel number from the Microfreak’s Utility settings.
On the M:S, you need to:
activate MOUT in the Track Setup menu for the track you want to use (for example, T6), and
in the CONFIG > MIDI > OUT CHAN menu, set T6 OUT to the MIDI channel number that the Microfreak is using.
(There is also a possibility that you could send an impulsive audio sample on the M:S to the Microfreak’s CLOCK input in order to trigger the sequencer as you want, but it would be fiddly even if it could work.)
Ah, I understand. I was a little skepticle of what I wanted to do anyway, so this is greatly affirming and helpful! Thank you so much! I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly.
Hi @skunkape,
Please also check that you use the original midi to trs adapter that comes with MF. It was not
working for me until I have used the original cable. Perhaps it is the same issue.
That’s certainly been used as a technique to sync with pocket operators. It seems to mean sacrificing one side of the stereo to function as a trigger. I believe, though, that this merely replicates the sync, which the OP already has running via midi, so
Actually a mini-jack (stereo audio) cable should do the job. You just have to remember the Microfreak is setup for Type B midi over the mini jacks, and the model:cycles defaults to type A. You just need to go to the Config menu (on the cycles) choose midi, then ports, then change ‘Out Pol’ from ‘STD’ to ‘INV’.
