Unwanted constant vibrato on A4 when using external keyboard

In Ableton, I have connected my Casio electric piano to my A4 via MIDI. I can select channels fine and play whatever patch is loaded on the A4. But no matter what sound I choose, when I press the keys of the Casio every note goes into an endless deep vibrato. I’ve tried opening different kits and searching through the Global menus, but can’t find anything odd on the A4. In Ableton I just have a generic fresh setup. Any ideas what is making every sound go nuts? It’s impossible to play a single smooth sequence of notes.

Sound like you’re sending a midi message increasing lfo’s depth, or Vibrato’s depth, or modulation wheel.

Does it happen on an init patch as well? Does the Casio have a mod wheel? For some reason a lot of synths default to vibrato assigned to mod (remnant of the 80s methinks), but not sure about A4.

Thanks @Jacob and @sezare56. I see that the vibrato parameter on screen two of OSC 2 goes crazy with each key press. It happens on every fresh patch I try. I don’t have any mod wheel on my keyboard or any other type of parameter I can imagine being turned on.

I am trying turning down all the LFOs but I can’t make this effect stop. Is there something MIDI setting on the A4 I’m overlooking? I’m not sure how I can address this seeming ‘default assigned to mod’ situation.

VIB parameter is increased, or receive different values ?

You can disable CC receive on A4, but it would be more logical to disable what is sent from the casio…

Here’s another observation - when I load a new patch on the A4 and play its keyboard, the sounds are normal. When I press a Casio key, the vibrato appears. Then, if I go to press the A4’s keyboard again, these presses too now also are ‘contaminated’ with the vibrato. To get rid of the effect, I need to reload the patch and not hit a Casio key…

It receives different values with each press of a key.

Randomly ?
In MIDI CONFIG, PORTS, you can disable CC receive, but ideally you’d want to disable the unwanted midi message sent by the Casio…

That’s normal if the VIB value is changed.

Yes, randomly.

Ah-ha, that worked, thanks a lot! I’ll have to make a note of this oddity, and look into if there is some solution to stopping the Casio from CC sending.

oh yeah right - because now when I go back to the A4 keyboard, the vibrato will most likely be a random value other than zero. Logic!

what kind of Casio Keyboard are you using? to me it seems that your Keyboard is somehow sending modwheel data.

Can you filter off the CCs from the keyboard using an Ableton utility, or Max insert?

It is a Casino PX-850. No mod wheel, but there are reverb and chorus settings, which didn’t make a difference when I set those to zero.

I have no idea about filtering CCs using a utility or insert, but that sounds really promising, @Octagonist. I’ll try looking into that (feel free to send tips/clues, too!).

Perhaps the Casio has a midi filter for the output to restrict it to notes only?

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll try to look into it.

I checked the PX850 manual, I think I found the culprit :
High Resolution Velocity Prefix, CC88 as A4 VIB depth…

Never heard about such velocity CC.
Didn’t find how to disable CC send in the manual…(double checked).
@slownsteady if you don’t find it in the manual, I’d suggest you to ask in a Casio forum…and filter CC88 if it is not possible to disable it. (Or filter all CCs with A4).

The MIDI Association - High Resolution Velocity Prefix.
