Videos of musicians making or talking through their music

You’ve probably seen every synthfluincer putting a video out about “Turning Your Mixer into a Synth!” or some other dribble like that, over the past week. Well just to show you some of the great stuff put out by Electronic Beats TV (their name, not mine) here is one from 5 years ago from Italo Brutalo showing you how he turns his Mackie Mixer into a feedback looping machine.

although no talking in the most, but here are some studio work casts by Zenon Records artists for the dark prog lovers

Hypogeo

Hellquist (he has quite a few)

Dirty Hippy

Evil Oil Man

(DnB session)

Pspiralife

Ooo …subscribed. I’ve been close to starting a thread asking for more “beats from scratch” videos … this will do nicely.

Electronic Beats has been fully run by Deutsche Telekom AG for more than 20 years as a corporate communications/culture/branding initiative.

Watching or listening to musicians talk about how they made their music is my guilty pleasure. I’ve probably spent more hours doing this than I have making music!

I love that Four Tet videos. His Against the Clock with the Michael Jackson sample is great. I also really enjoy him talking through this live setup.

This one by Mr Scruff is great especially when they go out into the hallway to get the recording

Disclosure did a load of live Twitch streams making music, back in lockdown. They’re about 2 hours long and amazingly insightful into their process in Logic Pro. I think I watched 5 of them, going to find the link it turns out there’s 73 of them to watch!

Two podcasts that I adore for their artist interviews and insights into the creative process are:

And, Hanging Out with Audiophiles

Brill responses folks; looking forward to some of these. @dshipp I heard a lot about these Disclosure sessions. Will have to take a look at those.

would love to have seen Mike Wells (Force Mass Motion) do one of these when he was working with all the old analog gear but . . . still a clinic from a master

Not technically a video, but I believe worth mentioning. I’ve only listened to the Surgeon episode, but looking forward to listening to the other guests.

I also love the RA Sessions. They vary, but some are usually accompanied by an interview (linked in the video description), or some begin with commentary from the performer.

Also, workshops at SchneidersLaden is great.

I‘ve also only listened to a few episodes but can absolutely recommend the one with James Blake. It‘s more meta and personal, maybe even philosophical, but gives a really interesting insight into his writing process and career.

There’s a video where Plaid walk through how they made one of their songs, but I’m having a hell of a time finding it. I can’t remember what song or even what album it was for.

sounds incredible but what a pain in the ass.

Yes, absolutely. When ever I start to get a little bit of an itch to buy an old Akai, I watch a video of someone editing a stab sample on it, and I’m immediately cured. Helps to be reminded of the suffering you endured once upon a time, but have successfully repressed from your memory.

That’s better than, “Sounds like ass, but what incredible pain…” which would be the result if I had a go with an old Akai rack mount unit.
