What Do You Like /Love about Living in Florida?

I lived in Tampa back in the day for a year and a half, made a lot of good music.

My parents are in Tampa (I lived there for a while when I was young). Cuban/Latin food is at the top of my list when I visit. Tampa has some pretty good steakhouses as well.

Beaches are beautiful too. I love a nice sunset on the Gulf.

Tampa always had a good indie music scene as well.

I love living in Jacksonville… I grew up in Atlanta, and it was a big change, but I have learned to really appreciate it. It is not for everyone, but it can be amazing…
It is hot as hell though.

I would suggest staying out of South Florida if you can, meaning Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties. I’ve been in this area for almost my entire life. While it still has some great things, it’s gotten so crowded and only getting worse, by the day. The worst part is that the housing prices are just obscene. Not California or NYC crazy pricing, but for Florida it’s absolutely ridiculous. Home prices have increased 2-2.5x since 2019 in many cases.

If I could leave the area, I would, but there’s some factors involved that keep me there for probably a few more years. You get so much more for your money if you head just a bit north (like Vero Beach and north). I’m personally a fan of north of Orlando and the Ocala area. Tampa / Sarasota is a very nice place, but I fear it’s much like South Florida in terms of pricing. Jacksonville area is probably good too, but I’m less inclined to live very close to the coast these days.

I’m just done with where I’m at, but I can admit that I’m looking at it from the lens of someone who knows what it was like 40 years ago. I can readily admit depending on where someone is coming from it can be a pretty amazing place, but just know that it comes with a significant price. But maybe it’s still less expensive than where you’re coming from? :man_shrugging:

I loved the weather and fishing while living in orange county Orlando. I hated mowing the lawn… damn that stuff grows fast.

I love the nature trails and parks, beaches, sense of community. Tallahassee is a smallish town in the south that is also fairly inclusive and very artistic, i love it here. Gainesville even more so - lots of great electronic music and a thriving diy music scene there. It’s also where Pulp Arts Studios are, which is a pretty world class studio, it’s worth trying to get time at.

South Florida is beautiful and lots of fun too, highly recommend visiting there.

Politically Florida is in a bad spot with lots of bigoted anti trans legislation making everyday life more and more terrifying for my friends, plots to destroy public schools, and more or less turn colleges into conservative religious institutions. Lot of young people move away to go somewhere ‘cooler’ and it has become more and more like this.

Not surprised re house prices, if I’d of lived in the US, I’d likely move there to avoid any future authoritarian mandates.

Humidity would take some getting used to however.

Use to absolutely love getting a Cuban coffee and guava pastel there in the late evening standing outside with all the old Cuban dudes.

What I love about Florida:
going to the beach all year long, melting pot, zero stress, low taxes, animal wildlife, and hurricanes also: they remind me how powerful nature is

What I hate about Florida:
Floridians. Luckily there are only a few remaining out there (endangered species)

I’ve only been to Tampa like I said lived their for a while, and Miami… the food was very much a highlight!

Those little deers in the Keys are cute.

Apparently, a blight happened many years ago that wiped out all the key limes and the growers moved to Mexico. I do love me some key lime pie!

I grew up in Tallahassee, lived there until my late 20’s. Great weather (except for the hurricanes and monster mosquitos) for being outdoors and hitting the coast, the springs, biking, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. I loved the grungy art scene in Tally, the All-Saints/Railroad Square area before it got super gentrified. I desperately miss the food scene there, especially Cubano cuisine which seems to be rare outside Florida. For the most part, the people are pleasant, but you’ll never find anywhere with people who are more polite, but also believe the most insane, hateful stuff. Truly, I didn’t realize how crazy Floridians were until I moved away.

Apparently key limes have a whole lot more acidity than normal limes. I suspect a lot of places make just lime pies but… don’t try that on me as I’ve smooshed whole pies against my own face in establishments that try such trickery.

Ulee’s Gold is probably my favorite film that takes place in Florida.
