What Do You Like /Love about Living in Florida?

what I’m saying is that if you’ve even had a cursory glance at the housing problem in California you’d know that we are in great need of this great exodus that you speak of, lets all hope the La Times and said other rags are right and all of our dreams come true, cause it ain’t what’s happenin on the streets right now, and the people very much could use the vacancies

This wasn’t a post I wasn’t expecting to see on Elektronauts today.

I war born in Miami Dade hospital and Florida was a second home to me growing up. Lots of good memories on Key Biscayne and around Coconut Grove. My aunt lives in Hollywood and my abuela is still in Kendall. I also caught a lot of big fish near my aunt’s house in Daytona.

Kind of frustrating what’s happened to the place, both ecologically and politically, but I still go back every other year or so, even if it’s just to walk down Ocean Blvd and eat a cubano :palm_tree:

What is happening? And I don’t understand what you guys are talking about? The abortion laws? Isn’t that almost everywhere? I’m not really political, but I don’t think they stuff affects me to greatly… I definitely don’t want everyone coming down here though… we have had so many people come here that prices for housing have pretty much doubled, even more a lot of places. It’s like as long as people keep thinking we are all backwards conservatives then people won’t figure out it is pretty cool here. Lmao!!

I’ve been to Tampa, Orlando, and Ft Lauderdale in Florida but only for short business trips. Of the three areas, south Florida was my favorite. Unfortunately it now costs as much to live there as California thanks to wealthy New Yorkers moving there in droves. I’d be worried about hurricanes wiping out my home and expensive music gear and high cost of insurance.

Posting from Los Angles, and yes, I agree, it is great that Florida is pretty far away.

noooo man, Gov Desantis has the right to call the good folks home, and I support him, the cost of housing out here is ridiculous, please we have a larger economy than France we’ll be alright with the exodus, just give us the houses back  :vulcan_salute:

Rodney Mullen is worth mentioning as a pro-skater from Florida. My friends and I used to skate with Elissa Steamer when we were in high school too.

I have done that drive a lot. It’s a pleasure to drive there until it is not. It’s a perfect mix of love and hate depending on the day and time.

I consider Cali to be a much more beautiful state. I lived the majority of my life in FL though so maybe I just got sick of it.

Versailles is great. I went there many times but there are better, for example - Islas Canarias.

People who want to be Floridians move to Florida, wow. Amazing facts, very meaningful.

By all means paraphrase me, but get it right mionic.
A more accurate statement would be: more people want to get out Cali than want to stay there on balance…

Actually that’s who I was thinking of…Per Welinder is from Sweden. Those two had the greatest scenes in Bones Brigade I and were pretty much the grandfathers of modern street skating.

I’ve lived in Florida since the '80s and I’ve seen the state undergo a lot of change in that time. I’m going to go ahead and say that our current governor appears to have done many things right with the way our economy, job growth and population have grown over the last several years. As a long time home owner, one of the things I like is that our property tax millage rate is portable within the state. The system is set up to benefit long term home owning residents for sure. It’s fairly standard for us to pay 1/10th what a new Florida resident will owe in the same neighborhood, for example. Housing in many areas has become overpriced thanks to hundreds of thousands of people moving here every year. For those moving from coastal US areas, they’re buying great value.

Fishing, boating and birding are all top notch if you’re into those things. There are a lot of wonderful, clean sandy beaches in the region. State conservation lands abound with thousands of square miles of wetlands and forests off limits to builders. Precipitation, sunshine and temperatures allow for a very long growing season. At any time of the year I’ll typically have between 20-40 types of fruit and vegetables that I’m growing organically in my yard. We’re allowed to keep chickens. At some point we’ll buy a farm and move further out but for now we’re decently happy.

very cool

Do you happen to grow passion fruit? I managed to get some to flower up here but never fruit.

I had one started last spring until the drought wiped it out. Mine was too young to even flower. Key lime, meyer lemon, blackberry and blueberries are what I have for fruit at the moment.

Nice. Ever consider planting north American paw paw? They seem well suited for the south.

I haven’t and I do not think I will want to where I live. I do not want another tree in my small yard at this time. I’m growing with a lot of ground cover and density so I need a clear view to the sky for my leafy greens and brassicas to be happy. :grinning:

Avocado, asparagus, meyer lemon, key lime, blackberry, blueberry, cabbage, carrot, bok choi, carolina reaper, red ghost, habanero and dragon cayenne peppers, heirloom varieties of tomatoes, coffee, chives, leek, rue, borage, parsley, rosemary, chard, longevity spinach, sorrel, beets, sweet potato, sugar snap peas, collards, and yuca. Corn and squash go in this week along with a few other things. This is on a 1/8th acre yard with a house. So yeah, no more room for anything that grows more than 4-5 feet in height. LOL.
