a mono auratone… and 8351a’s… I love them more than anything
Genelec 8010 minis. Mostly on headphones.
Have a pair of Genelec sam 8341 sitting around, waiting for a studio room…they are perfect! But not in a flat…sad.
I use a pair of Genelec 8030 with a home build closed sub and my second pair is vintage Auratones from 1986 in pretty good condition. I also use Audio-Technica M50x headphones. All are calibrated with Sonarworks that do wonders to my acoustical treated studio and to my headphones.
Focal Shape 50.
Love them, but have to keep bass trimmed all the way to -6 due to living in a flat without heavy bookshelves and with thin walls lol
Got them 15 years ago, just perfect
Right now I’m using two 15 inch tops and an 18 inch sub shoved in the corner of my tiny home studio. Somehow it doesn’t translate that badly. Pandemic has meant no other use for my PA system and I didn’t want it to just rotting the garage.
I like that. I’ve done the opposite a few times since Covid hit and setup in the garage so my pa can stretch it’s legs. I don’t have a big enough room in my house for my cerwin earthquakes to actually sound good so it’s strictly garage duty for the time being.
We lost the electricity in our garage a couple years ago and something keeps coming up and draining our savings that is more pressing than getting that fixed or I’d think about it. I could probably survive in winter out there with a space heater.
edit: looks like a killer sub btw <3
Sorry to hear that. I know how that goes, there’s always something that needs money thrown at it immediately. My garage is underpowered so I have to be strategic about how much current I run at once. When the weather improves I’ll dig a trench to run better power out there.
Yeah good subs but you can do better with modern designs, plus mine are the old version of the earthquakes (I have a pair of them). They take up a lot of space and a lot of juice but they’ll shake your fillings loose. Someday I’d love to have self powered pa cabs so I could stop spending so much effort keeping my old rack amps alive.
I’ve been using 2 sets of monitors between my studio and my home studio for the last 18 months… Adam T7V’s in my main studio (bought quickly after my Dynaudio BM6a’s died) and Yamaha HS7’s in my home studio (white ones that I kept in the smaller home-studio room to be less imposing visually).
I’ve had it in mind for a while now that I should put the HS7’s in my main studio, as they’re perceived as being ‘better’ than the T7V’s which get mixed reviews.
I brought the Yamaha’s in this morning, switched them over and listened to 3 songs on them before immediately wanting to switch back to the Adam’s.
It made me realise that I hardly ever think about the Adam’s when I’m listening through them or working with them in my studio… I can judge through them, I like their sound, I trust them, they translate great anytime I put mixes down with them… so wtf would I change that??
Honestly, probably a bit of ego… they’re cheap, I feel like I should have ‘better’ monitors… but that’s BS, right? If they work well, that’s gold.
So, which monitors do I use? Adam T7V’s.
During the last 5 years I had Neumann KH120, Focal Alpha and CMS, and JBL 306p mk2
Now I’m using APS Klasiks 2020 since early 2021, and I never been so happy before. 1000€ pair, but sounds like 3000€ monitors. Can’t stop recommending them. Improves mixing and production from day one.
My next ones probably will be APS Aeon 2 or PSI A21
I still use a pair of 25+ year old Event PS8’s and Sennheiser HD600’s. The nice thing about monitors is they do not become outdated with new releases of processors or memory. One of the best long term investments you can make.
JBL LSR305 MK1. My room structure does not allow proper acoustics so I don’t bother upgrading as I know I would benefit more from good acoustics than say, APS Klasiks 2020
I still think these are with the best bang you can get for your buck. I was so surprised when I had them at home.
I like the Klasik 2020s a lot, too
Maybe not the best for just listening/enjoing music
but it´s really a pleasure to mix on them.
very clear, “enough” bass, nice stereo (not really 3d though)
I actually use them for everything from sound design and analog drums synthesis to track/record jams and mixing. They translate really really well.
My ears got adapted so good to its sound that I also enjoy them for everyday music listening.
I think it is the opposite. Keyboards and synths improved with faster processors and more memory. Compare the current Roland Fantom the the original that came out about the same time. There is no comparison. 32 voices is not 256. Small amount of memory has boomed into a huge library. But there is not a huge difference between the NHT stereo speakers I bought then and the new Infinities I bought a couple years ago.
I use Focal Shape Twins and have been very happy with them!
I use them for production, general music listening, and just playing. I’ve got a bass and tube guitar amp that I no longer really use, because I get better (stereo) sound through an amp/IR modeler and the Focals.
Was especially impressed by their ability to replace my bass amp without any real volume limitations. I probably wouldn’t try to compete with a real drum set with them, though. I’d probably get FRFR speakers for that.
The only downside is their auto-standby if there isn’t enough signal. Not a big deal in most cases, but sometimes if I want quiet music while working in the morning, that’ll be too low.
Good old Yamaha MSP-5 bought in 1999.
Still working great. Lacking a bit of low end but a Presonus Temblor T10 sub does the job with them.
Genelec 8020, best monitors I ever had.
