Why is step one not the C key?

A 4-string bass has the mood: E - A - D - G
I guess that’s why.

That puzzled me at the beginning and threw me a bit. Coming from guitar and bass I find it refreshing now to have the root note in E. Although you can change this note to whatever suits you by changing the pad’s note.

Another way to ask would be
“Why is middle C in the middle on step 9?”

I don’t know because the engineers at Elektron did not leave us a note.

The old electribes were the same. Lots of my synths have keyboards starting at different notes.
