Its all can change but here’s my studio as it looked before I performed some pretty major “hardware integration” auditions over the last year.
I adapt to whatever they have out in the field. I do this by using the following:
#1: Technics SL-1210MK5Gs…any Technics 1200 will do but the MK5s are preferred because of the +/- 16 or 8 pitch control.
I use turntables for feel when playing vinyl (unripped, new, or in the collection)
My Xone DB4 mixer & 2 Xone K2s…
DB4 shines with vinyl, software, hardware, analog and digital…the MIDI control…routing Matrix and Pro quality sound card have it all…If I can’t bring mine, I can use a Xone 92 or whatever…
K2s…I use the K2s 8 groups of Maschine in Abelton Live but I also use one at time to control DB4’s loopers.
–NI Traktor: Traktor’s Clock Send Start/Stop/Reset function still helps me integrate Ableton Live 9 into the DJ mix. I use the DB4’s sound card and there’s no direct individual channel-out outputs……so with hardware, I had to use the Xone K2’s sound cards as aggregated to send Live’s audio back to the mixer and one pair to sync hardware clocks via an Innerclock Systems Sync Gen II Pro Cynq Lock….
That proved to be too complicated, laborious, too involved with several sound cards, and even other mixer…so I got rid of most of that because it was a big mess of hardware that couldn’t really be used in a Live setting (independently). It also would not travel well, and too many boxes that don’t change at the same time requires way too much from one person. I’d like to to do this myself so it wasn’t right….
A lot of what was really nice but impractical in touring situation was made redundant by the virtual versions or better that are easier to use as plug-ins within Live or Maschine….I can get way better results and control over those things and plan it for Octatrack.
Gone: MOOG MiniMoog Voyager XL…replaced by plug-ins…
Gone: Roland SH-101 Circuitbent…replaced by plug-ins
Those were nice but….I simply had to move on…
Gone: the now defunct Feeltune Rhizome SXE…it was nice and I wrote a lot on it but it is unsupported and became a headache at time…hang-ups, etc…and before that it was the
Bottomline, Maschine Studio and Live 9 do a lot for me in terms of creating recordings that can be arranged for use in the Octatrack….vice a static MIDI-controlled laptop playback system or the AIFF that isn’t as exciting as a vinyl.
It currently looks like this.
Hi ,
photo from my setup comes later:
Analog Keys
Octratrack
Korg Volca Bass
KRK Rokit RP8G2
Alesis Multimx FX 8 USB
and when it comes the Rytm.
Nice, Big Sky and Ambika are solid additions. Would love to have either of those myself!
Hello
Barfunkel , what’s your mixer Boss ?
It’s a Boss KM-60. An old mixer from the late 70’s or something like that. Very limited (6 channels, 1 AUX, just lo and hi controls for EQ), but sounds wonderful.
Recent acquisition from eBay is the Korg MS2000BR, on the left with Virus C. Similar concept synths but very different and complimentary sounds. The keyboard is Supernova II from around 2000AD.
The MacBook Pro runs Logic with Omnisphere. I create loops with this and import to the Octatrack for remixing etc.
The wee Genelecs are excellent, but out of shot are a pair of big Tannoy hifi speakers - not strictly monitoring designed, but give a good sense of how the sub-bass is going to turn out.
I put my Fender Pawnshop strat hybrid through the stomp board.

I’ve been on hiatus a while. You’re set up as grown dude.
Slowly! Next I’m getting a drum machine and maybe a Boomstar. Then start saving for an API Lunchbox filled with all kinds of funky compressors, then a proper (read: large and expensive) mixer.
The sun was almost shining today for the first time in what seems like months, so thought I’d take a few snaps of the latest iteration of the nerd-cave. Gear - Alesis Ion, RME Babyface, Soundcraft MFX12 Mixer, Machinedrum, Octatrack, Blofeld, Monomachine, Analog Four, Bitstream 3x, pair of Genelec 6010’s, Sennheiser HD 600 headphones. My girlfriend’s electric piano standing against the wall.
I haven’t quite gelled with the Ion yet, but I’m liking it none the less. Nice to have a knobby keyboard. I’m kind of torn as to what to save up for next - want to upgrade the speakers (thinking about Adam A7X), but lusting for a Spectralis or a Make Noise System. Also want a Minibrute, got to play one for just a few minutes once, and been craving more ever since.
Sounds something like this;

my current setup, the faderfoxes go through a self-written midi translator patch running on my phone.

Hey Daisuk, nice setup!
How are you getting on with the Bitstream? Dug mine out yesterday, it’s a clunky bit of kit but some great features!!!
I have the Adam’s they’re sweet. Spent a day A/B-ing monitors at a local store & they definitely had more detail than anything else in that price range!
Just to make you really sick I’ve got a predominantly Make a Noise system on the way, should be here next week, GF is just packing her bags lol
Thanks! The Bitstream is fine. It really is too complicated in many ways, I think, but as soon as I figured out how to do the basics (basically assigning MIDI CC), it’s been working well for me. So far I’ve only used it to control volumes and automation when jamming with the Elektrons. Works wonders for that. What are you using yours with?
Yeah, the Adam’s sound very nice! Good to hear that you like them. And a Make Noise system, you say? damn! You need to give me some sound demos and a lowdown on how your like them when you get them. I really, really want to save up for one of those, just don’t think I’ll be able to afford one in a very long time.
Yeah will post some stuff here, get some pics up too!
I used the chaining function on the bitstream mostly, great for dropping tracks from different machines in & out.
Messed about with the Joystick on the MNM yesterday, problem being the Bitstream is typical X/Y but the mono separates L&R so you end up with 3 CC’s. Ran out of time in the end, might come back to it.
Couldn’t get enough of Octatrack.
That’s the biggest amounts of Octatracks in one picture I will ever see, I think. Haha! Wow. Shit. How do you organize things in between them?
@ IHDR - what’s the piece of gear just to the right of the MD in your first pic?
