this reminds me of when I had the Analog Keys and the Vermona Perfourmer set up together. I kept thinking: “why do I spend so much time going through menus and pages, trying to get the Keys to sound half-decent and ignoring the Perfourmer? it sounds incredible immediately and is so much more fun to use…”
sometimes it’s great to do deep dives into sound design, sometimes not.
I totally get it. The Perkons looks the part. I’ve been searching for the same. I’ve built a modular drum synth based on the Dfam, Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Braids and A Foltek Matter ii with all kinds of modulation. Then last year I came across a great deal on a used Pulsar in my area setting back financially for months. I know the feeling!
Probably won’t get this, but I love dedicated buttons for every step and every voice of a drum machine sequence.
I saw Simian Mobile Disco had a novation launchpad set as an 8 step sequencer like this to sequence their TR909 live:
So I cloned it in Mozaic for iOS devices. If you edit the script you could have it emit other MIDI notes, sequence other drum machines than the software 909 I have here
Ok Pulsar 23 owners, give us some early opinions. How does the sound of the two compare with these limited demos in so far?
Right now for me it now comes down to - do you want totally open architecture - wild weirdness from the most ahead of its time machine made since maybe the nord modular, octatrack, op1 etc - or straight away playability with instant recall deep sounds….
To me the pulsar reminds me of the Folktek mescaline of drum machines, while the Erica is the perfourmer of drum machines (with recall and sequencing.)
I think the pulsar can be extremely immediate in its core sounds, but also grants the ability to be experimental and creative. I’d personally never give it up for the perkons. But I do like the look of it and wouldn’t mind having the chance to try it out.
The Pulsar sounds better and you get way more connectivity but if you don’t like a rats nest sitting on top of your drum machine maybe the Perkons is the way to go.
I really hope that digital voices means that we can update them. But in the absence of USB port it feels unlikely. I know we can update through MIDI as well but in 2021 that doesn’t sound like a strong selling point.
Sounds like an insta buy for “Illektrolab”-style low bass detroit influenced electro, which I really love!!
It also feels to me like a very core version of what their Techno System might be for most of its users (of course the Techno System is waay more versatile soundwise).
However I frickin’ LOVE this I/O !!! This on my Nord Drum 2 would be my personal “last drum machine ever” device, it should be forbidden to build multichannel drummachines with a stereo sum output…
I was wondering about how this compares to the Techno System, not so much the voices, but the sequencer. The Perkons sequencer looks very direct, showing steps for each voice, and ability to quickly record parameter changes (‘p-locking’).
How does the sequencer on the Techno System compare?
it does not at all, the Perkons is way more versatile, but soundwise it has a lot of overlaps. But again: The Perkons looks like a dream of a drum machine for me, except it is, at rhis moment, not my personal favourite sound, while the Techno System also has a lot of the same signature sound I amused from Erica, but more leaning towards experomentation
