As in other, numerous threads about flagging, and side discussion tangents about flagging, we’ve made our thoughts known about that flag system.
It’s helpful. It’s better than the alternative. And it works.
It’s utility exists to help us all stay within the guidelines. Guidelines that through use of this forum, we all agree to.
Is access to the name of the signaller(s) a problem?
(several if I understood correctly the activation of the flags),
like those of those who like a message?
I feel like it could be healthier.
Thus, “the signaled” is less close to the percecution syndrome and can perhaps pm “the signalman” directly and less “pollute” the thread.
If it doesn’t stick in pm, blocking as a last resort, thus the atmosphere of the wire is more protected, a discussion will have been possible and less work for moderators.
Or have a random report in all threads.
(like the false bullet of a firing squad)
Experience tells us the best course of action to look out for the community is to close this topic
This prevents folk backing themselves into a corner and an inevitable exit stage left
Little can realistically come of it, the software platform is built this way and it allows people to contribute and self-protect the place by keeping it civil or on topic or constructive
Otherwise you get all other internet experiences, which is that the place gets trashed and the good people don’t want to contribute
Venting is all and well, but when a vent is still an an implicit agree-with-me or it remains an issue it goes nowhere
Some folk like these popcorn moments, but come on, we’re on average old enough to have bigger things playing on our minds, this place is all about escaping from drama
I flagged once or twice for things I found violating. I got flagged once or twice for being off topic.
I never had a problem with flagging, I really don’t pay any attention to it. I read every of my posts twice and think about the words I use and how I use them. Went well so far. Sorry for those who feel bullied
That’s not going to get my vote, nor is it possible or even wise imho
So best let it go
We arbitrate because there is no other solution where warring parties can do so without spoiling the place
As said above - the guidelines are an implicit agreement to help the broader community by thinking on that level and less about facilitating pointless witch-hunts - it’s a popular place, part of the reason is that there is not too much of the cynical trolly vibe that spoils other places - that neat public-park took time to maintain and it needs ongoing maintenance with the help of everybody !
I agree and the system certainly means that anyone who values open discourse will feel this way.
I think the ‘user’ misuse is clear in that it is being used by the same people who on one hand give their ‘off topic’ political stance and at the same time flag someones opposing view.
The Mods suggest their system of subsequent adjudication somehow makes this fair and that you to can flag the other persons opinion.
However when flagging goes against who you are as a human being, it only favours those who want to suppress others opinions.
For a good number of us, at our core we won’t flag others because we understand the consequences of suppressing others thoughts and view points.
Mods suggested “The main misuse of Flags in non-use ironically”. We aren’t misusing anything. We don’t agree with how its implemented or on occasion adjudicated on.
That said, it is what it is. I signed up to it (noted PULSN didnt).
I am trying to take the emotion out of it, people still view flagged posts. Prob most users do.
Perhaps moving forward we can try to not let it get to us and have confidence people will still view the flagged post and make up their own mind as an individual.
I believe improvements could be made but if there is no concession, then we can only continue as we are and also look to find another place for political discussion that is more open, or create a new one.
It´s not about political discussions. It´s about discussions in general, where the flagging can´t be tracked why this and why that not, we had the exchange above about it.
Well, i think this summarized the result about this topic. I mute this thread now. Feel free to discuss further.
Community guidelines are in reality the default Discourse guidelines.
And establishing a very common ground.
Have you even taken the time to read them?
I don’t think Discourse engine makes it possible, so it’s a technical impossibility.
Moreover, we are just moderators, not admins. This choice wouldn’t be ours to make.
This is a blatant lie.
You contacted us to require your account to be deleted, and we suggest to only suspend you for a month, so that you can possibly cool down and return.
How dishonest.
And actually, I try to make myself available for a chat as often as I can: any user should feel free to contact me if they ever need to clarify something.
This is the only online community I visit anymore. It’s chill and filled with super-smart cool people. I’d have to imagine in these days with so much nonsense online, proper rules and user following them here is why. I have nothing but good to say about Elektronauts!
I’m with craig on this one. What comes to mind though is if excessive flagging becomes a thing i’d want some kind of flagging timeout. Ie you flag a lot, most of the flags aren’t deemed by mods to be valid you get a bad flags score. That way there’s an incentive to keep flags on point, but you don’t subject yourself to the mercy of the people you flag
Edit: bad flags score not being visible on your profile, just that it’ll count towards your ability to use that feature for a set period of time
