Flagging request to make flaggers transparent

Yeah same. I don’t bother with other forums.
So from my perspective flagging works (presumably as I still keep coming back).
I’ve been flagged a couple of times, no biggie.

Hi guys!

I just wanted to say that this community here is a good one.
I like how different kind of people (okay all synth nerds…) come together here and share something.

I for myself had bad times and sayed bad things too, and got flagged for it. Thats okay!

Please respect each other, I’ll try my best to do the same.

Love!

Guys , there’s more important things going on in the world right now than endless arguing about flags etc. This will just go on and on regurgitating the same old stuff for several days, mods might as well close the thread now.

We would get less flags if people just stopped and thought a bit more before posting stuff.

Yup. This is the only sane place in the world left with friendly faces and good spirit. Let’s not spoil it with this bickering.

I’ve never flagged a single post, I’m not aware if my posts have ever been flagged. I’ve hidden certain users that I tend not to get along with.

Sometimes I like to drink beer with my friends and talk about life and the state of world. Like a lot of my customers in my shop, I feel that there would be many good people to have a beer with here on Elektronauts. But just like in the real world, I tend to steer clear from people I don’t get along with. Why waste time wrestling over some minimal thing when you can sip beer with your friends? I’m 47 yrs old, I don’t have time to argue about small meaningless things.

Generally speaking I hit “cancel” over “reply” more often than not on this forum (and others) these days. If I’m not adding something useful or new to the conversation I tend to just not say anything. I just use the “like” heart thingy. (this post might be an exception to that, I realize lol)

I’ve been on here for a few years.

I tend to have a peak at flagged content I come across and typically, I can see why it would be flagged and how it doesn’t add to the forum.
I don’t trawl all the threads though, and I tend not to look stuff that looks like a flame war - at least certainly not to become part of it.

If I’ve flagged at all, I think it must be in low single digit figures.
I’m not sure if I’ve been flagged, so I don’t know if how I’d feel if I was.
In general, I think flagger anonymity is a good approach.
I don’t know if the mods are able to see who is doing flagging.
If for example, someone were to track another user and flag_all_their_posts_all_the_time (that would be weird but this is the internets)

I’m glad this forum exists in the way it exists.

One should have to put effort in and file a report with some options to fill out and an explanation. Reports determined to be done in bad faith lower your private reputation score, which mods can filter/sort new reports by. Reputation gets an automatic bump every 3-6 months or on request. This will build trust between mods and users who are essentially to act as assistants.

I’m all for it. Most of us are adults here. I suspect we have a few chronic flaggers that are responsible for most of the reported posts.

I think a ratio system would make a ton more sense, if possible with the current framework.

Hello. My name is Smapti and I flag things from time to time. I do not do it as a form of downvote or because I want things I disagree with to be deleted. I flag because I sometimes want to bring moderator attention to things. They can make the call.

Moderation is good. Flagging is good. I’m An Old so I’m used to internet communities where the mod team actively requests flagging (eg Metafilter). This is a sign of a healthy & robust place. It’s much better to flag & move on instead of getting into a yelling match.

If you don’t like flagging or moderation there are plenty of unmoderated places on the internet. For example, Gearspace is right over there. Gearspace is also a cesspool. There’s a reason for that.

This is the best approach.

I’ve been flagged, but I can’t recall flagging anyone, even nazis…
if you’ve got a beat machine you’re welcome in my book, bonus points if it’s a syntakt

I have also gotten irked by things getting flagged, and myself getting in hot water in arguments where I felt I was on the right side. I still get annoyed when I see flags at times, because I feel people are too sensitive.

BUT! I have learnt something from this, and it’s that this is not my living room, or my local bar, and my opinion about this forums tolerance level is irrelevant. It’s a music technology forum where I get a lot of help and interesting conversations at times. And a lot of fun at times. My opinions do not matter at all here, and if I express one, and the people in conjunction with the landlords find it inappropriate, so be it. There are plenty of other places to spread my tired edgelord humour.

I feel like what I say on this forum is not important enough for me to feel attacked if it gets removed.

I know not everyone feels that way but I have to admit, with how many tools there are for communication these days, I don’t understand why one would fight against protective measures when they could found their own sharing space.

I have seen somewhere on the thread that the flagging system doesn’t bother you if you would abuse it, but I have to express my concern about the opposite: what if some want it gone to abuse its absence? That would be a bigger concern to me, despite how rarely I have interacted with the flagging system.

Often, i’ve wondered how fast i would get flagged if i expressed, in a detailed and unfiltered way, how i despise (almost) anything that uses four on the floor.

But yep, flags are definitely misused, i’ve seen it too often in the short time span i’ve been here.

I want to flag myself so bad right now…

Oh good lord. 100% of the reason for this ill begotten thread is because roughly three days ago the OP declared Superbooth’s mild and reasonable protocols to help stem the spread of a virus causing a global public health crisis to be both “apartheid” and “fascism”. Why is anybody even entertaining this recreational victimhood like it’s a topic?

I agree that flagging should remain anonymous for reasons stated above (PM flame wars, etc).

I tend to expand flagged content, I suppose because of curiosity, and also because I find it somewhat darkly funny when strangers on the internet get into flame wars with each other. In my observation, I would say a large majority of the time, it’s obvious why a post was flagged (ad hominem attacks or excessive snark targeted at other users, for example, or posts spinning very obviously and distantly off-topic). But sometimes I read a flagged post, and it isn’t clear to me why it was flagged. Not sure if Discourse supports such a thing, but when flagging, it could be helpful if there was a list of common options explaining the reason for the flag, + “other” or something.

If anyone is keeping score, I’d like to register that I think the current system works great and the Mods do a great job here. Big part of the reason why I spend so much time here and not anywhere else. And I say that as a person who only posts here and there, but I just enjoy the community aspect and the supportive nature of the place.

Yikes, wow. That definitely puts a new angle on things. If anything, this indicates the utility of the system: comments like that should be flagged, so I guess the OP inadvertently made an excellent point in favor of moderation.

Yeah making flags transparent is imo is just a way to promote bad blood between people and basically turn this place into an all out flame zone. Yes flags can be abused to a degree, but given the options I think it is the best way to go about it to keep things civil and let people feel safer to flag things.

I’m totally in favour of keeping things as they are. I have been flagged and had comments hidden before and while my feelings were a little hurt at the time, on reflection my comments were off-topic and were correctly flagged as such.

This is a friendly and inclusive forum, nothing needs to change. If people don’t like it the way it is, they need to move on.
