FromSoftware Games Thread

I’ll be away from my console for 3 days. I’m still thinking about it.

Same area with the staff is a very powerful spell. Id suggest going back and getting it.

I think I know what area you’re talking about from researching how to use it but I didn’t find it there. I found it in Liurnia.

Thank you for these links. Very informative.

So do experienced Soulsborne players usually go for a twofer focus str/dex or int/fai and put all their levels to those? How do people usually do it?

Just go and pick some flowers instead is my advice.

STR/DEX is a ‘quality’ build, and there are some advantages to that - some weapons and ashes will certainly pay off. It doesn’t really work for me as I prefer to specialise (and I also inevitably prioritise stamina). INT/FAI makes more sense to me, because a wider pool of magic helps you adapt to various situations, but I haven’t touched magic in Elden Ring yet, so I don’t know how it applies there. You’ll want a lot of mind points also, so as with the combat build you have to be confident in thinning out your stats…

Went back to the cemetery now (Dark Souls, mind you), at lv16. Still didn’t stand a chance.

Until I forgot about the upgraded stats for my character, and just faced the skeletons in a different way. I lured them up to the pool by the stairs, where the area is substantially wider and more space for me to dodge and move. I found that whenever they lunged, a timed dodge actually placed me right next to them where they were completely unprotected. A slower lunge with the spear then disables them temporarily, which means that once I had them in that stab, I could just repeat that until they were gone.

So levelling up didn’t help much, but the stuff I learned from the other part of Undead Burg most certainly did.

Funny though, they give less souls than the way easier ones along the other path. It’s like, what? But then I found what they were guarding, and that in itself was worth way more than just a bunch of souls.

You’re welcome.
I haven’t really gotten into the builds yet. I still play mostly guide-free, living hand to mouth and taking what I can find. That’s why my stats are not yet optimal. I also stupidly started with the beggar. However, I have now found so many spells and wands that I can now start shaping my spellblade (melee mage) build. I wouldn’t level Faith on this build. All in INT (60+) followed by VIG / MIND / END (20) and DEX (max 18) , STR (max 12) for my weapon (Rapier).

But judging by this video, the pure caster also puts a lot of pressure on. This also makes the game a bit boring, just kidding

Magic is super powerful, but also resource-hungry and sometimes difficult to execute in hectic situations.

As NickD says, STR/DEX is straightforward, you can always do it. The best weapons in the game also scale with these stats.

I played Dark Souls 1-3 with STR/DEX builds, it was always fun and you never get bored in the game because of all the variety of weapons. my 2 cents

What are you using? The skeletons really don’t like being bonked with a blunt instrument. Blades are less effective… and also you might not yet be at the stage where you’re dealing with weapon scaling, but that can make a big difference as you level up (although it’s more about where you’re putting the stats rather than the actual level).

Quite often you might look at the damage changes offered by a level up, and think it’s not that great and the points might be better spent elsewhere. But a single point damage increase can mean the difference between a three-hit takedown and a two-hit takedown, which is a major benefit when there’s more than one enemy.

Thanks @NickD @AriHaf. I think as this is my FS I’ll go with what I know best: hacking and slashing (and, now, dodging). Anything else just throws my concentration off. I’ll undoubtedly play this again, so will try some things out then.

I think I broke a quest, though. Do FS quests stay broken?

I’m using the spear  levelling up mostly dexterity and vitality.

Pretty much everything you do is permanent, so it is possible to scupper lines of progress (e.g. by killing an NPC). It won’t let you make things impossible, but it will certainly let you make them harder. Similarly, there’ll be quests you never even know about until you read a guide after your first playthrough to see what you missed.

If you’re playing ER and want to slash, consider the Samura - the starting sword is great fun and has a powerful default art. Plus you get a bow, which is really handy for kiting groups of enemies into Kurosawa showdowns. Took me a while to decide, but I’ve not had the urge to restart with a different class yet.

If you feel like they can’t be solved anymore, yes it can happen. Sometimes the quest givers just disappear depending on what you did before. Your decisions have far-reaching consequences, so to speak. This can be annoying, but it’s also what makes FS games so attractive.

Because that’s what NewGame+ is for. If you miss something on the first pass, you can do it on the second pass.

You can also copy a saved game before you decide on something very important. That way you have a backup if that was a wrong decision. It’s very easy on the PC. No idea how it is with the consoles. It’s also a bit cheesy, but you don’t have to do it.

I decided to keep hold. You never know, I might respec when I can and put it to use.

For noobs, I can’t stress how useful it is to go and batter through that southern island bit. I’ve still got a little bit left to go but I’m now up to level 33 (after starting as a wretch).

I’m also going to have to plough points into mind after picking up what seems to be a beast of an ash summons in this area. Upgraded jellyfish will do in the meantime though…

The others have explained it way better than I could. All I’ll add is don’t let it paralyse you from doing stuff in future. Whether that’s killing some asshole or using a single use item or whatever.

It’s very easy to kind of not want to use stuff just in case and you end the game with heaps of stuff that’s just wasted.

Oh, nope, all good on the quest. Thanks everyone. FromSoft community + Nauts =

@NickD I’m already a vagabond but should have chosen samura for sure. Bow would have come in handy.

I’m certainly making the most of it, though the craftable daggers would work in a pinch. I suspect the bow will come into its own on horseback, but I keep forgetting I have a horse.

Did you know that your horse can do a double jump?
I found out very late.

I only learned you can dismount off Torrent without using the whistle! Mind blown :joy:
