Think they could’ve easily justified the subscription model, it it had simply granted extra iCloud storage for project files.
Can’t agree with that. Replaced my Mac with an iPad. I do use AUM for jams, but when it comes to working on a track and Getting Things Done, it’s Cubasis time for sure.
My guess is that it should destroy competition in terms of acoustic drums. iOS isn’t exactly known for having good multisampled acoustic drums that aren’t a major pain to use.
I wonder if it still has one of the main weaknesses of the desktop version. I ended up abandoning Logic because it couldn’t slave to MIDI clock (among other annoyances), maybe at least the iPad one can have this super basic feature. Not important to those who work itb only, but critical for using hardware sequencers. Apple’s reluctance of adding it was always baffling.
If MIDI clock sync is still missing, there’s no way it could replace Cubasis as my main DAW. Otherwise… well, if they offered it for free (or at least at a discount) to current Logic users, it would definitely be worth giving it a try just for the drums alone.
Anyway, waiting for Bitwig move now.
A few people have mentioned the lack of headphone socket - it is a bit annoying but you do know you can use a cheap USB C to 3.5mm adapter? Yes it can get lost and it means you can’t charge at the same time (without a hub), but it’s not the end of the world. Mentioning it in case people think you have to use Bluetooth!
I’m psyched for this. Existing iOS DAWs either have not great UIs (Cubasis, Auria - admittedly I’m somewhat picky when it comes to UI quality) or not enough features (GarageBand, NanoStudio) for me.
If I can use this to make full songs or edit Drambo jams or whatever then seamlessly hand them off to my Mac, it’s easily worth $5/month. Subscriptions are annoying but something needs to happen to enable more pro software at realistic price points on iOS.
I’m ok with the subscription, it lowers the barrier to entry for most people who wouldn’t drop £200 upfront for an app like this, although having the money for the hardware is another thing. Logic is the only daw I use so it’s nice to have a second option - if only my iPad weren’t 10 years old…
And there is an headphone jack on a macbook air.
But I understand that Logic users are excited. I would be as well if a full version of Ableton Live was launched. It would still be nice if Apple created a solid usb c hub
This is what I use as well. But then you loose the only usb c port so you can’t connect other machines/tools to your iPad. Again if there was Ableton Live I am sure I would forget about all of that and just use it on my iPad
Definitely not defending the lack of headphone jack as it annoys me too (especially when I misplace it!) but you can use a USB-C hub here - the headphone adapter will work via a hub because it’s just a mini DAC (the old lightning ones were an analog audio pass through I think). I’ve got a decent portable USB-C hub which doesn’t add much bulk (given you’re already using external gear in this scenario) and it works fine
I didn’t know I could use this adapter with a hub! I will give it a try then thanks a lot.
Yeah it’s not obvious that you can! This is the hub I have, I don’t use it a lot but it seems fine when I do. Very portable and the key is it has a USB C port on the hub. If you use mainly USB C devices you might want something with more USB ports of course! https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B08V18B23X
I have a similar hub. I thought on the usb c port you could only plug a usb c cable to charge the iPad
Edit: it doesn’t work with this hub (the usb c port is only made to charge the device)
hello elektronauts !
does anybody know if we will be able to have multitrack recording via logic pro on ipad ?
if not, does anybody know if an ios app can do that already ?
thanks for your time.

AUM and Cubasis can do it. I am doing it with the TX6 for instance. I don’t know for Logic but I think it can
Ah the joys of USB I’m saying very confidently that it works for this but I’ve actually not used it for ages so I can double check this evening. Note that I’m using a USB-C to female 3.5mm adapter, not USB-C headphones. No idea if that makes a difference
I’m sure it will be able to, as other apps do this. Note your interface will need to be class compliant as drivers won’t work on iOS but most recent ones should be
ty !
you mean i can have the 8 track of my digitakt in seperate tracks on aum ?
i only have the main L+R outs appearing on the list of harware ins.
No, for that you need overbridge, which doesn’t exist yet for iPadOS
oh ok, ty. logic
I could be misreading this, but all the stuff on the website makes it look like their version of Ableton Note. Not in terms of features (obviously this has way, way more stuff), but a supplementary subscription with project compatibility so you can work on your music away from the computer, and extend the experience of your DAW. In this case presumably you’ll get all the benefits of using iCloud and whatnot too.
I think the thing they’re banking on is people loving the experience of being able to wander off with an almost full version of Logic on a tablet (vs a laptop.) I think this is also a tempter for potential DAW switchers too. Try a few apps on iPad, use Logic as the natural DAW to record that stuff for a low price, and then whooops you just bought a Mac and a Logic license too. Because it’s on iPad they’ve obviously gone to town on it and the touch control on things like EQ and Alchemy look really good.
It’s worth remembering what Apple makes money on. They sell about 3x more tablets than they do computers. This could be famous last words, but I suspect rather than forcing the end of perpetual licenses, this app will be a mainstream option to subsidise Logic as a whole (which as others have said is pretty much unsustainable) as the market of iPad users is much bigger than desktop users. I’m guessing they thing more people will pay $49 per year than will stump up $200 for full blown Logic.
Note: Saying all this looking at it as a Mac owner / Ableton user.
Accept both stances, so your mind isn’t unnecessarily occupied with this matter
I’ve had to do this.
I’m likely to try it out for a month or so, despite my subscription moans.
NEXT!
