!! I was looking for something like this when I bought my last iPad, but it didn’t seem to exist at the time. Ended up with a clunky hub.
It is actually: using an USB-C <> 3.5mm jack also means listening through a crappy cheap DAC converter. Apple used to have pretty good build-in DAC, as opposed as what’s built into these converters. Not to mention all the inconvenience, especially when the main advantage about iPad setups is portability.
It’s $5 a month, lets not let another thread get bogged down with economics.
It’s not about the price, but the model. Subscription means no ownership, and as people gets attracted by the low upfront for one subscription, it adds up quickly.
I have no issue paying a Netflix subscription, because if I care about owning a movie that I really like, I can can still buy it elsewhere.
Allow me to pay 100$ for Logic Pro on iPad as a 1-time buy with paid updates, and keep the subscription aside and I’ll be happy. And I say that being a software developer for living.
f you find 50,- a year to expensive for running a professional DAW than why did you buy the most expensive tablet on the market?
That’s why my last iPad is a Mini 4 that I received as a gift. I might be rambling, but the original vision of Steve Jobs when the iPad was unveiled was to make computers more accessible for everyone, kids included (and rich, probably). I find the pricing a bit ridiculous nowadays, and asking more subscription on top of that feel a bit greedy. Still, the iPad hardware is unmatched, and the platform is great for learning, but I can’t stand the lock-in and all the Apple restriction anymore.
File management: I’ve had no problem using iCloud for file transfer
I don’t want to use iCloud, I want to simply access the files on my device without the need for network access, cloud service or convoluted app. You know, like we’ve been doing for the past 30+ years.
- The future: 10 years from now you’ve bought another Mac running a newer version of Logic. Previous versions might not even run. Are you gonna keep old Mac’s laying around having them all work together?
That’s why I stopped using Logic and moved to Live. Also why I keep my DAW usage minimal and migrated to a mostly full hardware setup. The synths I bought 20 years ago still works fine. My Logic projects from the same time, well, not so much.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy that Logic Pro on iPad is a thing, and if you’re fine with the limitations and pricing model then enjoy it!
I’m just making point why some people (myself included) are not fine with that, and I personally don’t want to encourage these moves in the industry, as you know, companies tend to follow Apple’s lead.
I will give it a try! Thanks for the link. I would like to be able to connect the TX6 as well through one of the usb c port if it is possible.
I think I will try LP as there is some inspiration from Ableton Live Session view + a step sequencer. Looks great… (even if we already have that in Drambo)
It’s the same as the built-in one. I have read several tests over the years about these, and Apple’s adapters sound the same as the built iPhone/iPad DAC chips. Here’s a nice example
Agree on the convenience though. I can never find the adapter when I need it.
I’m not a software dev, but it seems like it should not be a huge deal to get existing au/vst3 plugins running on the m1/m2 ipads if they are already running natively on Apple silicon.
You beat me to it. I was going to say the people over at Headfi find the Apple branded usb-c to 3.5mm adapter to be very very good value for money:
Seriously, there’s absolutely no subjective sonic fault that I could find, and this is no real surprise either since the A2155 has shown to surpass surpass the CD Red Book standard when it comes to objectively measured audio performance.
In other words, excellent transparent performance regardless of price. There is absolutely no reason at all to pay more for a USB DAC, at least when it comes to pure sound quality with headphones.
I suspect this adapter performs better than the built in DACs of older iPhones and iPads because it will be less suseptable to eletrical noise. Certainly iPhone 5’s headphone socket was more noisy than I would have liked.
My brain is making a leap into the future… What if you could run Overbridge in LP on the iPad?
Yup my brain just had an orgasm.
Edit - I mean that would be bad, because so many people are telling me I can’t like this news.
I must conform to their standards.
I remember when apple got rid of the CD ROM in the laptop and everyone though they were mad…
Like it or not everything will end up cloud and subscription…the course is set, its just a matter of time.
At least you can micro-edit your bangers in the waiting room:
Seriously though, I’m firmly in the anti-subscription camp. And if they want people to use a pro-level DAW on the iPad, have some pro-level I/O built in for chrissakes.
This doesn’t seem like a fair comparison. iPad 3 came out in 2012. How long does any company actually support products that are more than a decade old? I highly doubt Microsoft or HP (or whomever) are supporting 2012 Windows hardware. On the other hand, I still use my iPad 2 to run the GUI part of my H9 effects pedal, and it is currently running the latest version (and that is after leaving that old iPad out on top of a shed all winter in Northern Minnesota).
What do you mean by “Pro level I/O”?
I’m looking at my MBP and it has 3 USB-C ports. The iPad has 1 which seems logical or would you prefer having multiple cables sticking out of a tablet?
Two C ports and a proper headphone out would be the minimum, IMO.
Isn’t that an accident waiting to happen and how practical would that be holding that?
One cable to a hub, or an adapter when you need less seems much more logical imo as long Apple doesn’t screw us over with the ability of that port.
Technical evolutions for sure implies changes. Marketing ones, I’m not so sure.
Cloud and subscription models are marketing push, not tech evolutions (and I say that working in the Cloud business).
If we don’t like it, we don’t buy it. If we don’t buy it, they’ll have to change their models.
Don’t forget that how we use use or not our money is our collective power.

My example may have been badly worded. I don’t expect Apple to support older devices, but not allowing to install (older) versions of software that used to work on the machine is what I called out.
On your 2012 Windows hardware even if MS or HP don’t want to provides updates or drivers supports, you can still use another OS (Linux for ex) or reinstall any of the software from 2012 that you used at that time.
Funny enough is that my Windows desktop is from 2010, and still kicking running Windows 10, after an SSD/RAM/GPU upgrade few years back.
I think this announcement will be a boon for OP-1 Field and TX- 6 sales.
I will try it for 4 weeks but definitely not subscribe. Vote with your wallet. Subscriptions to music software (for me this is hobby only) are not an option for me.
I don’t mind paying for software appropriately. And yes, I would be willing to pay quite a lot of money for Logic on the iPad. However, I don’t want my finances, which I want to keep track of every month, undermined by countless mini-subscriptions. Plus, it would be extremely annoying to have to decide over and over again whether I still need Logic and want to keep paying for it.
I want to spend money on the stuff exactly once, but then not have to worry about it anymore.
…i’m afraid, we all gotto learn stop hating subscription models…it’s the future payment method all over all places, wether we like it or not…
only good news here…a subscription beyond a 10 bux a month payment won’t work for most average people…and by now, everybody has at least already one music streamingfarm to pay, at least one movie/series subscription to pay…plus one or two tool subscriptions for ear or eye worx…
and once u get beyond 100 bux a month for all sorts of subscriptions…well, all reasonable and possible headroom starts to shrink at some point…even in turbo capitalism…
50 bux a year for logic running on ipads, sounds reasonable…at least for now…
and let’s not forget, if ur making ur money with such things, u can add it all up to cut ur overall income taxes…
I want a subscription service that sends me wake-up calls in the morning. I want a subscription service that sends me different breakfast cereals. I want a subscription service that tells me which synths to buy, as long as those synths are only available by subscription. I want a subscription service that keeps track of all my subscription services.
