MC 707 / 101 : New Roland Grooveboxes

this really good @rephazer !!! muito legal!

How hard is to play keys on the machine? this one not velocity sensitive am I correct?

Thanks! The pads on the 101 are not velocity sensitive and playing them is okay I guess. I am more of a sequencing guy

Hadnā€™t used the 707 since the latest update. The copy and pasting of drum instruments was very much missed from the previous versions. Now if Roland would just implement sysex controlā€¦

Im really only missing an arp on the 707. Itā€™s a great box, but feeding arp into clips via midi is a bit meh.

And a count-in

Iā€™ve never been an arp guy. Although the one on the xp60 I have is kinda killer.

Count in hopefully included in the next update.

Continuing the 101 journey :grimacing:

The MC-707 keeps popping up used locally for around $720. I have been tempted a few times, but am still unsure. After some of the recent updates it seems to be much more mature, but the sample time limits still seems low.

Are people that purchased initially happy with the updates, or does it feel like a few things are still missing?

Is it better as a central hub, a midi module, or all by itself?

I only have the 101; bought as a rompler with a sequencer. It hasnā€™t disappointed on the rompler front. Sequencer is handy but I prefer to plug in other sequencers.
Though the patches are limited in the synth edit, the effects are good for what I need.
You can create a polyphonic 4 track chain of clips and resample and apply a wide range of onboard effects and scatter to make a lot of interesting variation.
It is a bit fiddly though and takes time to know the menus.
707 looks much more accessible and powerful, but I wanted a smaller box as I have elektron to do the heavy liftingā€¦

I thought it would bug me more, but Iā€˜m pretty ok with the editing. Since there are so many sounds I always find something that gets me in the ballpark + the fx can add a lot.
I used not to use presets much, but on this device I kind of like it. It lets me concentrate more on making tunes.
I wish there were less cheesy sounds. But the basses are great, pads and epiano sounds as well. It usually doesnā€™t take me long to find something that fits the track and the sound engine itself is really good for my taste

Great tune!

thanks, mate :slightly_smiling_face:

Just got a used 707 for 700 a week ago. Been messing with it, and while the menu structure is a bit less intuitive than a Digitaktā€™s, Iā€™m finding myself enjoying a lot of what it can do.

Iā€™m seeing a lot of people discussing the preset tones, but I havenā€™t even touched them. Been focusing on using my own grab bag of self-made and downloaded on shots for the drum kits, and I do appreciate being able to process them on potentially four effects routes (MFX, then the master reverb, delay, and MFX).

Whatā€™s really been interesting is the synth engine. Iā€™d made a few dozen synth samples for the V-Synth and the Blofeld SL, and Iā€™ve stuck these into the MC-707ā€™s synth. Unlike the others which can play 2x samples, the 707 can potentially handle 4 at a time. The sounds I get are pretty different thanks to the per-partial sound editing. It also helps maybe layer a few samples with some VA or PCM sound. And then, the resamplingā€¦

Finally, the looper. Still trying to wrap my head around it, particularly the subdivisions and the timestretching. It sometimes doesnā€™t sound too good, but it can add a layer of filth to a drum line.

Were you able to register your used 707? I ended up picking up a used one. It should arrive this evening. Excited to give it a go.

Next one.
tell me if I should stop posting tracks here :upside_down_face: , Iā€™ll use the ā€œshare your tunesā€ thread then.
But I thought people might be more interested in 101 demos here.
