I do have the SubH and the Minitaur, I only have had the SubH for about a week, so I am no expert, but I do know that I will not let go of my Minitaur, it has such a solid low end. Much better dedicated bass synth I think. The SubH is off course great for a bunch of other stuff.
Minitaur hands down. There is just some irreplaceable beef there in the low end. Great pairing to have though. SH can sparkle in ways the minitaur cannot.
Yeah the oscillators in SubH seems to be different than the ones in Minitaur. Just judging from the videos, I find Minitaur bass much beefier than 6 VCOs all together on SubH. Even M32 can produce beefier low end in comparison. But the fact is, there’s still something characteristic about SubH bass, it’s different, more subtle.
Definitely agree. SH has serious character. Very moogy of course, but it’s sound is quite distinct from all of the other Moogs in my studio.
Morning all
I got both DFAM and Subharmonicon second hand.
DFAM came with this AC adaptor:
Subharmonicon came with this one:
The “issue” is with Subharmonicon: if I plug the AC adaptor first in the wall socket then in the unit, it starts up. If I plug the unit first then wall socket it does NOT turn on. Is this normal?
Any idea anyone?
Thanks for any hint
V
The DFAM one is the official one from Moog. Not sure about that one you got with the SubH.
I have just sent a ticket to MOOG support
Will wait and see.
In the meantime the unit works perfectly.
Should I keep using it (without risking damages) with the provided AC adaptor?
Notice the difference in power output rating.
14.4 W for the healthy one.
6 W ( less than half ) for the sick one. Very meager !
What is happening is that Puny Power is barely able to function and has to get a running start to keep up, and then probably just barely.
I’m conservative in regards to these sorts of things, and would not run this. More risk to the PSU, but not guaranteed harmless on the SubH long term.
Thank you @Jukka
So am I (conservative) with regards to these things. Will stop using this AC adaptor and wait for a new one…
Manual QUOTE DFAM:
POWER SUPPLY (INCLUDED)
STYLE: Wall adaptor; barrel connection, center-pin positive
INPUT: 100 – 240VAC; 50Hz – 60Hz
OUTPUT: +12VDC; 1200mA
POWER CONSUMPTION
TYPICAL: 3.0 Watts
Manual quote Subharmonicon:
POWER SUPPLY (INCLUDED)
STYLE: Wall adapter; barrel connection; center-pin positive
INPUT: 100 – 240VAC; 50 Hz – 60 Hz
OUTPUT: +12VDC; 1200mA
POWER CONSUMPTION
TYPICAL: 4.8 Watts
I can see the Subharmonicon has even more power consumption than the DFAM: 4.8W vs 3.0W
Nerdy Engineering Chatter
Those are input power ratings but that’s close enough. Notice the word “typical”, meaning it varies from this some, like particularly on power up. Also most often if you design this you’d build in at least a factor of two margin.
Where would I be able to locate a proper AC adapter for the SubH then?
Now that @Jukka has explained the issue, I suppose I am not going to wait for MOOG techies to drop me a mail
This is interesting, and it must be because the DFAM is analog only. I wonder (but please don’t experiment with your gear for the sake of this experiment) if the ‘meager’ adaptor would work fine with the DFAM.
Someone somewhere said you can use a pedal splitter/adapter, so you could theoretically use a pedal power supply, but can’t remember where I saw this, and can’t vouch that it is true.
Thought about trying it but I would not want to damage either DFAM or Subharmonicon…
Now that I am aware of the “issue” I am not going to take the chance.
In the meantime I have received the following answer from MOOG:
“The power supplies for each synth should be identical, they should both be the Mega branded supply. I suspect that the other supply you have is providing an unregulated voltage, meaning that it is moving slightly above and below 12v as it provides power. If you’ll include your shipping address in your reply, I will route you to the nearest distributor/service center where you can purchase the correct supply.”
Would have thought that due to the increased number of OSCs on SubH (6)… I am no techie at all though
I can confirm that. I have M32, DFAM and SubH. Each unit has identical power supply
Thanks for confirming
