Here’s a track centered around the SubH with some extra FX and layers added in post. This is part 1 of at least 3, all from the same all-day jam with this little guy.
Little did I know that part one would also be a farewell tribute to Cooper FX – it wouldn’t be far off to say this is a Gen Loss v2 video as much as a SubH one.
I almost sent the Subharmonicon back after a few hours. But i gave it another try the next day and now i’m in love. I especially enjoy not seeing the notes and having to go by ear. Great instrument! But also moody.
I’m a week and change in with mine and I have to say, I can see where the limitations are and am not even close to dissatisfied with everything possible between them yet.
I’m currently using it with:
Logic Pro X (and plenty of Valhalla VintageVerb + Delay)
Clock out to:
Keystep 37 (which plays WONDERFULLY with the SubH as a duophonic synth!)
Controlling via midi:
Digitakt, which also plays well with the exception of no discernible way to bypass the internal gate of midi notes (please correct me if I’m wrong, it seems to completely supersede the VCA EG which is annoying as hell)
Ch. 1-6 out to:
Model:Cycles for some lovely FM drums
Ch. 7 out to:
Minilogue XD for pads and chords
Ch. 8 out to:
Subharmonicon, often controlled via the DT for a longer sequence at the cost of individual sequences for each VCO (would also love to be corrected if that’s possible via CC and I’ve not figured it out yet)
If only I saw this before heading out for the holidays lol. I’ll check as soon as I’m back - ty! I recall having issues finding note on the dial or anything similar besides INF, but I’m probably not thinking of the right way.
28 days ago, secret-firmware-guy commented on this Reddit post claiming to be the individual at Moog that implemented the SubH sequencer code. He was asked about the bug, confirmed again that it’s known and to ”please stay tuned.”
Been using the SubH for bass duty mainly but I really wanted to try sequencing each oscillator with my modular rig and go stereo (bought the Quadrax/QuadVCA with that in mind) and here is my first try at it (Strymon Magneto adds a lot here!). My mixer was full so I’m using 4 oscillators instead of 6 but sometimes less is more.
I think the biggest weakness of the Subharmonicon is trying to fit it into an existing idea. It’s so great for generating new phrases and motifs, but tough to match its pitch/key to something else in progress. Still, once you nail it, the Subharmonicon can really tie a jam together.
Here, I started with a sequence on the Qu-Bit Bloom and moved to the Moogs after that. Once I was happy with the Moogs, though, I basically took the other sequences out until the very end of the jam. The sound of these little black boxes is just really a show-stealer.
Firmware 1.1 is out! Looks like the clock output bug is fixed (plus some other fixes), plus add the ability to transpose the sequencers by MIDI input, use pitch bend via MIDI, and set note priority
