I mostly just use the step sequencer for automation. It’s pretty convenient for things like changing the initial state of an automation compared to going into the awkward List Edit mode.
My typical workflow if I want to set/lock a parameter at the beginning of a sequence is to dial in the parameter first, then enable automation write, press Play and quickly twist the knob a bit. I then go to the Step Sequencer and erase the subsequent automation steps so it only contains the initial step. If anyone knows of a faster method, I’d love to learn it.
The middle pic is when you select the bar field then press encoder, which allows you to jump to any event etc. You can type on the onscreen keyboard or use the jump buttons on screen, set locator points etc.
Unfortunately when I use the Locate function (say to Bar 17) my Step Sequence page still says it’s on Bar 1. I want my Step Sequence page to jump to a specific bar to make detailed edits.
Yes, it responds to midi Program Change commands to change sequences… there’s a setting in the main menu that lets you tell the MPC to switch either Programs or Sequences when receiving the PC command.
Yup - that’s what I’m talking about. We might be saying different things. I want to be in the Step Edit screen and jump to different bars without having to use the - Bar + buttons - especially with long sequences. The Locate function doesn’t work in this screen.
Oh I thought it worked in either screen, I can’t check now as it is late here. If it does not work in step edit can’t you do the edit in grid edit? (it deffo works there)
Sigh… I picked up a MPC Live 2 today with some store credit from sweetwater. Should arrive in the morning. I missed the battery, and the added speaker is even better.
I have to say that the battery and speaker are both fantastic. I bought the Live 2 specifically because of them, but I’m still surprised by how much I use both of these features. Basically 90% of my sessions are on battery these days, and I really enjoy taking my headphones off to monitor some stuff with the built-in speaker. I even make music in bed nowadays (the rubberized buttons really help avoid getting my wife annoyed!), which was my ultimate portability test to pass.
