MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 2)

I read freezing and I thought it was like freezing tracks in Ableton, which is non destructive, I knew about flattening, super useful but for some reasons I hardly use it.
And this is something I noticed recently when spending time on the sp-404, on the Mpc I’m way more ‘conservative’…

I’m the same way on both the 404 or mpc, the combination of features on the mpc is like a lil box of alchemy, stuff like taking 4 different short break layers setting all of their triggers differently and rhythmically hitting a single pad, resampling that chopping it up again, freezing flattening with effects on and on… the looper, the clipmode, the slice warping, freezing, padlinking, track exploding, FX… etc… and you can do most of the mangling without the sequencer just like the 404… or use the sequencer, step automation, use recordable pad mutes and track mutes for mangling as well as building parts…

when I use the sp and the mp together i use the sp for Fx
when i use the sp alone it’s cool, but i’ve been using both for years and the sp’s resampling game has nothing on the mpc’s resampling game

Man, so much I still have to learn.

it’s all out there  , the mpc is the most video documented beatmachine of all time and the majority of all of the models core concepts apply to each other, so you can watch the oldest mpc videos you can find and still learn something from them.

the sp is well documented as well

Well, all the info is out there to become a theoretical astrophysicist as well, but it is still a lot to learn while living a busy life :slightly_smiling_face:. My daughter starts kindergarden next year, so I am planning some serious use of my new found free time once that happens.

the learning never stops, at least I continue to learn stuff all the time  that’s part of the reason why samplers are my fav instrument…

I recommend just digesting a little bit at a time cause that’s what works for me, I’m not one of those see the whole picture all at once types

If anyone has been wanting to upgrade the SD card for their MPC, today would be a good day to do it.
Amazon Prime day has some big discounts on them, for example;

Deal of the day for Prime Members: SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB SDXC Memory Card up to 170MB/s, UHS-1, Class 10, U3, V30 https://amzn.eu/d/92u3QdQ

I think the moments when I struggle with the Mpc live is when I try to use everything it does, instead it f focusing on what I need, but apart from that it’s great, ages ahead of my last Mpc, the gigantic 5K…

Crazy, I paid more than that for an SSD 1,5 years of the same size. Haven’t gotten around to using it yet since I only use my 128 SD card. It’s just so convinient. Might be time to upgrade soon.

The amount of FX you can stack before you even hit the need to resample is kinda crazy tbh… 4 at pad level, 4 at program level, then you could route to submix, 4 at submix level, 4 at output level, plus 4 sends, am I missing any? Lol

Amazon has a big problem with counterfeit sd cards, ssd drives, etc. Even if you buy from a reputable seller on Amazon you can’t be certain because they co-mingle inventory. I would get important electronic storage devices from somewhere else.

where do you get yours?

I always go to crucial for ssd or ram, memory cards I usually get from ebuyer…

I haven’t had any issues with the SanDisk SD cards from Amazon, and I’ve had at least 10 of them in the last 2-3 years.

what are the specs on an SD card that you guys think are important to have?

The Mb/s transfer rate is the usual benchmark and what will vary the price.
But, for what we’re doing, audio usage as opposed to video, anything above 50mb/s is going to be ample.

B&H Photo Video usually has what I am looking for with free shipping as well.

Not exactly what you’re asking but this is an OPx-4 pad that sounds like a Wavestation. So with all that’s on offer on the Mpc you can definitely get into WS territory.

Nothing particular to add but just wanted to mention a personal breakthrough through I had last night, and it may be entirely obvious to many of you. I turned off quantise when recording melodies and chords and it enhanced the track and experience entirely.

It seems obvious when I’d been working this way on the Op-1 but with the Mpc I’d just been working from default settings.

I felt a low level stress dissipate as i realise the Mpc doesn’t have to feel as clunky as it might seem.

Early morning MPC thought for me (…and it’s worrying that I wake up thinking this stuff…), but, wouldn’t it be great if could assign the Drum Synth plugins to individual pads in a Drum Program.
