ive heard more interesting stuff come out of the digitone but to be fair theres a whole purpose built elektron sequencer paired with it. I definitely believe its capable of similar but theres something to be said for ease of getting there for sure. if the digitone can crank it out faster id go with that. obviously if you want to use a full blown FM synth an MPC plugin probably wont cut it but if youre jamming on your MPC and you need a quick FM sound… cant be beat
Firmware 2.11.3 is out and it includes a fix for popping & crackling issue.
link? mine still says 2.11 on inmusic
edit: nevermind got it
glad they got some stuff sorted! no more clicking and pops in keygroups. I was actually having issues with this the other day when I was trying to do single cycle stuff. I thought it was because I was using single cycles but it turns out it was a bug then.
downloaded the adventure kid waveforms retuned to C. its fucking awesome on the MPC because in the browser you can just shift+load all. in a keygroup you can layer and mix and tune 4 like oscs. its all almost instant to load. with all the normal keygroup stuff+FX+pad perform+arp and youve got a full on little funky wavetable synth barely taking up any ram at all. if you chained a few and then chopped it up with slice automation too now and youve got some weird wavemorphing stuff. very cool. will be experimenting more
Could you please expain a little bit more? So you basically can morph between a keygroups in which every layer is 4-osc “synth”? And this gives a sort of “wavetable scan” sounds?
Nah I’d only tried single cycles layered in keygroups (which is still very cool) but I got ahead of myself. I just tried it (chain of 8 single cycles). You can’t morph it because you need to retrigger the pad it doesn’t change while the notes playing. closest you can get is turning on note repeat but it doesnt trigger nearly fast enough on max. would need to retrigger every cycle I dont even think thats possible with midi. regardless I highly recommend loading up folders of waveforms into keygroups. dumping all 8000 cycles into one folder so I can ‘load all’ it and see if it takes ten years. there currently in loads of sub folders so you can only load all one folder at a time
well thats my curiosity satisfied yes it takes ages lmao MPC is chugging along though took about 20 mins. not that you would ever need to load 8000 samples…
handles it surprisingly well though. little lag pressing the sample page but its scrolling through them no problem
right i need to stop doing pointless shit and go to bed. I do have a program idea that I want to try tomorrow though.
It’s hard to say which sounds better this early on without proper comparison sound wise.
Most dont even know how the OPx-4 works (how to use it yet) lol
Digitone should be the favourite, it is almost $1000 FM Synth box after all.
A bit hyperbolic ($799) but agree.
It’s totally my subjective experience. The presets are amazing, they sound rich and snappy. The modulation options are endless. But I felt that unsatisfying feeling of having 600 additional Hype Synth presets. The OPx4 presets lack a typical character that sets it apart from other synths. I guess it has to do with the fact it has the same filters, effects, envelopes etc as the rest of the AIR synths.
When I connected my Digitone afterwards I was, oh yeah, this is really different (not saying better).
I’m a bit obsessed by that but… I made an init program without modulations, FX, etc… only operator 1. It’s supposed to be a sine wave. I sampled it and zoomed. In fact this is not really a sine wave but a kind of saw. It could explained why I’m obsessed since the beginning and why this FM synth doesn’t sound like the others. And maybe why it is close to Hype from which I never been able to issue a sine wave from.
have a Digitone and very happy with the 4-op sounds I can get out of it, so wasn’t expecting to want/need to shell out the $150 for another (plugin) FM. that said, the addition of sample layers on the OPX4 is intriguing and gives something else – albeit non-FM – that the Digitone just can’t do. so maybe not an immediate purchase for me but also not totally ruling it out
I have a digitone keys right next to mpc and like them both… they sound very different.
Anyone tried one of these or something similar for their Live2?
Had an Analog cases (bit big/bulky), Magma (tricky to store extras), wasn’t quite happy with them. Thought maybe a backpack to fit might be better.
I have this one, I put:
live 2 + decksaver
mac book pro 16
roland ju06
cables
psu’s
few extras
edit: sorry I forgot to paste the link (I have a different version)
Can anyone here explain to me how I can map my MFB 501 Pro across the pads of my MPC One? I’m totally confused. Have only been able to get the pads on the One to trigger one voice across all of them.
It sounds like your drum machine is set to Omni instead of a specific midi channel.
You might also need to edit the MIDI map of your MIDI track, there are options for chromatic, MPC etc.
Thank you for the replies. I just saw someone responded to me asking this question on another forum, but mmm, I’m not allowed to respond there to ask for some clarification as I don’t exactly understand their instructions. Anyways, I’ll try to sit down with it soon and try to experiment with the information provided so far.
"Late response, but yes, you need to use midi CC, I dont recall the CC number, but basically all drums are on the same midi channel, same note and then you just change CC to change sound, on that note you can also change pitch and release of the sound as well.
I think there are two ways to operate it via. Midi, but this is what I use."
