I’ve been going through a Nils Frahm phase (again), and I thought to myself it should be a fun challenge to try to replicate some of Nils brilliant sounds played on thousands of dollars worth of gear on a single Digitone!
This is the result of that experience, my apologies in advance for my pathetic attempt of a keyboard solo (I can’t play keys for shit), but I think sound-wise it’s in the ballpark.
Cool! I like this kind of studies. I think one can learn a great deal from trying to recreate their favorite artists’ work, and then build original work from there. For example in the past in my AV artwork I’ve set out to create Max/MSP systems that approximate works by Ryoji Ikeda and Robert Henke. Elements of these studies later fed into new projects.
@dtr Couldn’t agree more! Studying the greats, understanding what they do and how they do it, is one of the best tools to develop the building blocks for your own work.
Fun fact: I bought a Roland JU06A that I intended to use for the main melody line, but in the end I got much closer to the tracks’s sound using the Digitone rather than the Juno!
This is great. You’ve really nailed his sound.
I discovered Nils Fram a few years ago from this video with Olafur Arnalds. It’s really worth watching right through. The pieces with the Oberheim and the Korg synths are magic.
I had tickets to go and see him in Glasgow a couple of years ago, but it was cancelled due to snow shutting the country down!
Nils Frahm is amazing and this is an excellent take on his song. I’ve been recently blown away - if that term can be used with such delicate and intimate music - by his Empty album. That soundscape of a great sounding piano and all those accompanying sounds is just beyond words.
