NINA, motorized analog synth from Melbourne Instruments

I think it has a nice sound. It is in a similar price bracket as the Sequential 6 series, which do have keyboards, but NINA has double the voices, multitimbrality, 4 different outputs, and patch morphing. It’s almost like the Poly Pro 3 that I was hoping for architecturally. I love the mix of analog and wavetable oscillators, and you can load your own wavetables. Just BYO-Sequencer and jam away. A synth like this could keep me busy for a while.

I think I only watched the Loopop review and thought it sounded nice but was a little bit underwhelmed. That being said I think I have very different tastes to that guy so I think I was judging the musical output more than the sound itself.

I think the multitimbrality goes a pretty long way towards justifying the price before you even get to the motorised knobs.

They’re also far less of a gimmick for a multitimbral synth than they would be if it was just a one patch at a time beast.

My hope is that they take this as a proof of concept and bring it to lower tier devices as well, but depending on the device it could stray even more into gimmick/luxury territory. Where it’s at now to me seems an expensive but genuinely useful addition.

Agreed with this. I have the prophet 10 and adore it. I’ve played the OB-X8 too. This sounds as good as those, albeit different.

agree well I am on no gear this year and next so all good. Virus, OB X8 and Rytm do what I need and want anyways.

OK, with those newer demos it is growing on me… I would still say it seems like a really nice versatile general purpose analog synth (especially with 12 voices and multi-timbral and morph), but not an especially characterful synth. Does sound good though and they are really using the motorized knobs to their max potential, the build and UI look phenomenal.

If you’re talking about Doctor Mix and Matt Johnson, don’t be fooled by their Sound. Those guys are real players and they will go for all around sounds. This Synth will do as much craziness as you want. The Morph feature will get you into unsuspected territories. I think.

Well then now I need a demo of the crazy sounds ;-).

I couldn’t watch that last video, the presenter really put me off. I’m sorry if he’s someone friend.

I thought the same thing. He was particularly high. He’s not always like that, though.

I don’t have much to say about it, but what do those more knowledgeable than I have to say about this listed as a feature:

  • “Hackable Open Source software built on a powerful Raspberry Pi 4 running Elk Audio OS”

Does having Pi4 hardware inside mean there’s potential for expanding i/o or other hardware mods? Is it potentially upgradable to future PiX versions for more processing power? I got no idea but I’m intrigued.

I’m surprised how much this sound demo reminds me of the A4

So, as I understand it, the MIDI Channels are per Preset, not Global. Hmm, any good reasons for that? For my workflow, this ain’t ideal but I’m an intelligent person, I will adapt. I will create a Preset template.

Love this synth! Fun, easy to learn and sounds really good. I do wish for:

  • a screensaver on Nina.
  • better management on the presets. Be able to fast jump through the list, search, move presets etc. Why can I just use 1-16 for the first 16 presets when I have 30 + presets in a bank and need to scroll manually to get to that preset that’s far down the list?
  • see the waveforms on oscillator 3.
  • why not showing an oscilloscope than just the big Nina logo on Home screen?
  • that the color of the screen could be changed. Perhaps even fonts to personalize your Nina.

What’s your wishlist?

More fx, different kinds of the currently available fx, maybe additions to the arp and sequencer cause they’re so barebones. Love some of your suggestions! Maybe more filter types?

More filtertypes would be welcome.
