OctaEdit - Octatrack Software Editor and Librarian [ OSX / Windows ]

:joy: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: imagine what’s going to happen when you’ll put your hands on it

OS X would be fantastic!

Having only just got my OT and already finding myself thinking, ‘dang, would be nice if I could copy or move this, especially when I start making a full live set…’, it’s great to know you’re on it Rusty, looking forward to checking it out when you’re ready.

And if by chance Elektron are keeping an eye on these threads, I hope they don’t let Rusty’s hard work make them think that some of these things don’t need to be addressed in a OS update once the OctaEdit software is out. By all accounts this OctaEdit software is gonna be great, but I think most people would still rather do as much as possible on OT without need to be chained to a computer for common functions… Users seem to be resigned that there won’t be another update but there are at least a dozen pretty simple little tweaks/additions to OS that would make a huge improvement to work flow. Hopefully Elektron aren’t planning to desert OT users prematurely…

Don’t hold your breath on a native OSX version at the moment…

The good news though is that there is a lot of people who nabbed early access licences who are very happily running OctaEdit on OSX/Wine with no issues at all.

There are detailed installation instructions available here OctaEdit OSX Install Instructions and the whole installation can be done quickly and painlessly.

So… whilst everyone is being distracted with Overbridge / Rytm… I’ll slip this one through quietly underneath the radar.

The Sequencer module.

I won’t even begin to try and list everything this module does… but if you have a question about whether it can do something, the answer is “Yes”

Fully integrated with every other module in OctaEdit, this is the nexus.

It’s all working very well at present, reading and writing data back and forth with the Octatrack; however, there is a massive amount of data/items that I need to check… like every single possible permutation on the Octatrack, and then all the available functionality within OctaEdit.

I believe I have covered everything, or if not, at least 98% plus.

Once I am comfortable with all the tests and checks, then OctaEdit will be available.

Oh thats realy great!!

I am wondering to what extent this integrates into the octo in real time?
I guess this question concerns the Arp /LFO designer and the sequencer module.
Lets say when you create a ARP in the module, can you audition your changes in real time? Or do you have to edit, then save to flash, then audit?

Same goes for the LFO and sequencer module.

Thanks

drool.

Non real time I’m afraid. The Octatrack doesn’t even have a basic midi implementation, never mind full blown SysEx that can be leveraged off. And at any point in time the compact flash card is in use by either the Octatrack or OctaEdit.

As above, sorry. My hands are tied in that regard unless I fix the OS… and then there is other stuff I would fix first. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The Arp Designer and LFO Designer modules are seperate from the Sequencer module, so are “standalone” as it were.

They both have Read / Write functions that integrate with the Sequencer module, or of course you can simply drag/drop each way if that pleases you.

Likewise, the Library module integrates with the Arp Designer, LFO Designer and Sequencer modules… simply drag/drop between anything to store or load anything into/from the Library.

And thats why I have 1,000’s of things to check, and double check

Wait till you see what she can do :stuck_out_tongue:

Great job by the looks of things Rusty. Hoping this isn’t going to be too expensive and I can grab it on release.

Shame none of it is realtime but I can understand you’re working within the limitations of the hardware/os. I can’t really see so much point (this could easily change when I get my hands on it!) in all the modules if it isn’t real time,… think I’d rather use the small screen/menu dive on OT and have things like patterns/lfos/effects/arpeggio etc respond whilst I’m programming. But I think this will be very useful for organising files and moving stuff around.

Don’t suppose you could add some new effects too  (kidding)

Trust me when I say there is a method to the madness…

 looking forward to checking it out. Last night I spent an hour just making a dark synth weird modulated sound from a single cycle waveform with effects, to play in chromatic mode. Made me think how good it would be if you could kind of save tracks like they were user presets on a synth, to use again in other projects, guessing your software makes this kind of stuff a lot easier

Exactly… See? Now what are you going to do with that? You could store it in the Library… and then use that again a year later…

The Library is basically a “preset manager” that you can save an “Entry” to; being anything from anywhere… and these entries can then be used anywhere.

Sounds great  If only Elektron was as motivated as you! That would be an awesome feature to have internally, so you could audition ‘presets’ in real time etc.
Can’t wait to try the software. Hope it’s all going well there and not too much stress behind the scenes.

all looks amazing, can’t wait to try it out… nice one Rust

In Rust, we trust!

In all seriousness, when I saw you mentioning you have an editor in the works, I never thought it’d be something this cool. I hope people flock to the editor and paypal the crap out of you. I know I will!

All you have to do now is implement the sampling portion and you’ll have a software version of the OT.

Plus more…

:astonished:

Raise a feature request, you know the drill.

PS: Jamrod’s got a Linnstrument… so, so tempting… drool… all your fault of course

Sorry if this has already been covered…

Will it be possible to share library entries with other users? I’m imagining a downloadable package that contains the machine information along with any used samples.

I think that would be pretty cool. Users could grow a Reaktor style pool of shared machines.

Hell, you could take it to the next level and let us monetize instruments and then take a cut yourself! Use bitcoins… bitcoin prices explode… and next thing you know you’re rich with a linnstrument for every room in your mansion!
