How can you say they will be providing an update to the sp16. It’s become a forgotten thing it’s been a long time they have moved on to developing new devices that’s where the money is.
I do some work for Pioneer DJ, but I also signed an NDA, so I can only tell you that they are actively “collecting and organizing” feature and improvement suggestions for both devices…but I have not been given any information that confirms if and when a firmware update is coming. Perhaps the fact that many Pioneer DJ engineers in Japan may be working from home right now and factories in China and Malaysia may be uncertain with the re-opening timeline may indicate an opportunity to redirect R&D resources away from other planned projects and toward continuing support for existing platforms. This is all conjecture but not far-fetched.
I keep thinking about trading my analog four in for one of these. It seems ideal for live work.
Picked up a SP-16 recently. The sound out of this thing is amazing, and the Dave Smith filters are absolutely lovely from the get go.
Would Also love all the additions @darenager suggested, however I’m not too sure how much more pioneer is invested in the unit. The unit is ugly, and some things could be implemented more elegantly within in the UI, but there’s something I really like about it and how quickly you can get things flowing.
I do wish they would add more effects like they originally showcased, and also the ability to preview your “resample” without having to save it first.
@RhythmDroid do you think there’s a possibility of seeing anything like @darenager has suggested
Just about to hook up my Roland mc 101 to the SP-16 this weekend, so let the fun begin
This is why I had to repurchase, the sound is amazing and unique, the filters alone are worth the current price. Imagine if Elektron adding sampling and some basic sequencing to the Aanalog Heat or a Sherman Filter Bank with the added functionality, that’s how I see the SP-16, a hifi sampling “tone” box with some nice extras
It has also made me want to use my other gear and not because of it’s limitations, but more so expanding the creativity that it sparks whenever I use it.
At this point my Maschine MK3 is collecting I have used it all of two times … maybe.
SP16 and iPadPro with NanoStudio 2 is proving to be a monster combination.
I agree with you 100%.
Sound quality is very very good.
These are expected to sound totally transparent over massive, expensive soundsystems…so Pioneer DJ did make sure their audio engine is top notch. I just wish there were more effects per voice, but resampling can kind of take care of that, and it’s a very quick process to resample.
I honestly can’t say if any of the suggestions are going to be implemented. I really don’t know the answer to that. I wish I could be more of a help!
Thinking about picking this up seeing as they’re going for 500 - 600.
Was wondering if you could cycle through slices with the LFO?
I hate the machine gun effect from samples so I’d need a way of doing round robin and was thinking it would be possible with sample chains and LFO, if the LFO can be assigned randomly to a slice when a step is triggered.
Does anyone know if it can be done? Else I’d have to look at MPC but that to me seems way too administrative, and I’ve a squarp pyramid that covers its extra midi sequencing.
I just checked this out for you.
So, a random LFO can be set to sample start time…but even if you have the sample in question sliced to a hard grid of any number of slices…the start time does not lock to a grid line when the LFO controls the start time.
However, if you forego using an LFO, and you just lay down your trigs, then assign a different slice to each trig (which is very fast) you can have some variation, but it’s not 100%, it’s assigned by you.
You could have a sample which was actually 4 different snares chained together. Then slice that into 4. Then each trig you just assigned a slice at random, you’d get that effect…but it would loop every 4 bars…that being the only catch.
Thanks for that! Appreciate it. Yeah was thinking I could just enter a different slice for each step but would prefer to automate it.
What’s your verdict on it? Would you recommend it over the Mpc live? Is the sound as good as people say. Most of the demos on YouTube are shite music so it’s hard to tell.
Hmmm. Well the MPC Live is a bit more…but it seems like you get more effects, more effect slots, an extra MIDI in, and no limitation of 4 bars in patterns, and a piano roll editor…
Yeah it does have more going on but most of that is down to its sequencing, which my pyramid would cover. I think I’m leaning towards the SP-16 because it just looks way more immediate than the MPC. The MPC looks a bit convoluted… but I’ve never used one so maybe its a case of getting used to it.
I have the Force and it’s more immediate than the live you might want to check it out.
Ohhh! Sorry, I didn’t see that you had a Pyramid.
Yeah, this is a good friend to either the Pyramid or Squid.
If you can sequence it externally you have a very nice sounding and easy-to-use device.
I love MPC workflow, that’s what I started out on but the Toraiz is definetly more immediate and sounds amazing, but the only way to know is to try it. I wish it had X, Y, Z features but I am happy with the results i get.
I’m kinda confuse by the looping/live sampling feature added in 1.5 - they say record is not quantized. Maybe you can help me understand if this scenario is do-able or if maybe I’m overcomplicating.
I want to capture 1 bar loops of individual voices off my eurorack and save each voice to a pad. Then play them all back in layers.
On the OT - no problem - put a record trig at the top of a bar, set the len to 16, you’re good.
With the SP-16 being unquantized for record, does this mean if i want to use that loop in another session that I have to nudge it into time to start at the 1? Then nudge all of the loops so that the 1st beat lines up?
Any Toraiz users know if this is possible?
I want to play each pad from an external keyboard, all on the same midi channel.
When I press C1 on the keyboard, Pad 1 plays on the Toraiz
When I press C#1 on the keyboard, Pad 2 plays on the Toraiz
etc. etc.
Bypassing the Toraiz sequencer. Just using it for sample playback.
( C1, C#1 etc are just indicative… any note will do)
Any insight?
finally decided to get the SP-16 after a disappointing experience with the MPC One. trying not to sound overly excited, especially as we’re still honeymooning, but it’s pretty great. have already made so much music with it, despite all the limitations that exist on paper, and that i thought would really bother me.
this is what i thought earlier, just seems silly now after actually using the machine
now the improvements with biggest potential imo:
- being able to use master fx and send fx simultaneously - now it’s either or. i really like the compressor, but i also like reverbs, and as there are no per-track reverbs it’s always a choice between the master compressor or reverb as a send fx.
- being able to record parameter changes
- the delay is ridiculously simple. would be nice to also have a low-cut option, stereo offset/ping pong option, and have a send parameter instead of a mix parameter. the delay time is also not interpolated, although it’s parameter lockable. the spiral effect found on pioneer mixers is really nice, wonder why that couldn’t just be ported.
still, it’s very very capable and sounds great. love it!
What didn’t you like about the MPC One? Too much like using a DAW? Or other reasons?
wrote about it here: Akai MPC One
it felt bloated and there were just too many minor things that i heavily disliked.
I had the SP-16 for a hot minute after playing with the DJS-1000 for a minute or two longer
That was all late 2017 / early 2018
I actually really liked the DJS-1000 and would be into it again, but I’m also curious about the SP-16 because the price is right.
I can’t remember some things.
Does the DJS-1000 have the same number of FX as the SP-16? I know there was a recent update for the SP-16. But did the DJS get updated as well?
If I export stems on the DJS, does it wrap the tail to the beginning to make perfect loops? I think the SP has this as an option in the RENDER settings, but I’m not seeing it in the DJS.
Mutes. When muting a track, does it mute the notes, or the whole audio channel, effectively killing any reverb, delay, or sustained note tails?
The SP looks real interesting again at it’s price point. But I was way more creative with the DJS, because of how it was laid out. I’m in the market to get either one, again.
Thanks in advance!
