Pioneer Toraiz SP-16

Its funny, I had the SP16 for a while but sold it in the end. I had loads of fun with it but came back to Elektron because of the sequencer capabilities. Its good to see there is still some love here for the SP16. There is not a sampler out there that has more audio quality then this one… there, I said it… Maybe some day I will buy one again. But now I am more then satisfied with the OT.

Found a way to record longer loops. Live looping gives you up to 32 bars of quantised sampling, tho you either got to be precise with your launch or set the play trig where it works best on the sequencer grid, if you want to play back the results from the sequencer.

I’ve only just discovered this so I’m still not sure if live looping actually quantises or if my timing’s just flawless :sunglasses: but I’ve managed to capture perfect loops more than once through this feature and use it in other contexts outside of the session itself. So I must’ve done something right and it feels like the Toraiz helped me along

does it at least mute the pad if you hold it down?

Just wondering - it feels like Pioneer has ‘replaced’ the SP-16 with the DJS-1000- but only the SP-16 has the juicy DSI filter though doesn’t it?

I believe DJS-1000 was released about a year following the SP16, so I don’t think it was meant to replace it. I think the DJS-1000 was released as something similar to the SP16, but with a size, and layout, to appeal to those familiar with CDJ’s and whatnot. I think the DJS-1000 had the live looping feature out of the gate, so that was an appealing feature, and the SP16 added it in a later update. And yes, only the SP16 has the DSI filter. The drive and filter combo on the SP16 are dreamy.

I wish the SP-16 had motion sequencing. Seems like a standard a feature in samplers nowadays. Even my Volca has it.

Ok so I got one after all

Where should I begin? Any tips? I will have it set up next to an OT, DT, A4 and three mono synths.

I guess first update it to the latest firmware…

PS: you guys here are wholly responsible for me buying one, lol, that’s why I turn to you for inspiration

Yes, update the firmware

I wish I could take credit for the new converts  I have definetly been pushing the SP16 but @circuitghost has definetly taken it to the next level. Anyways welcome to La Casa De Toraiz !

SP-16 also makes for a good midi controller, I’m learning. Really digging the usb midi out, which I think is new in the update? I don’t have a dedicated midi interface.

SP-16 has been discontinued–call up AltoMusic right now and when they log into Pioneer it says “These show as being discontinued”

On that basis Id recommend buy the SP-16 right now from Sweetwaters for USD$899 as these are going to be a classic sort after machine in years to come. Looks like Dave Smith Instruments and Toraiz have parted company

Hi buddy both have the same convertors —attached is Service Manuals for each to prove it

Id keep the SP-16 -watch the price skyrocket --as AltoMusic have confirmed today discontinued

Hi buddy apart from the Mutronics Mutator the analog filters on the SP-16 by Dave Smith are the best sounding stereo filters that have ever come to to Market–yes it beats the Akai MFC-42 analog filter rack module by a mile . This makes the SP-16 worth the price of admission alone! Id rate the sound even better than Analog Heat.

haha @dickmalibu we’re partners in crime :sunglasses:

Start with only the Toraiz and the onboard factory content. You’ll learn the machine within an hour or so. It’s dead simple.

Then, I think I’d turn to live sampling specifically, since that’s where you can record longer loops and use them to interesting effect.

Thanks, yep, that’s what I reckon, too. Discontinued? That’s why I got it so cheap, probably

Honorable mention for stereo analog filter is Sherman restyler too.

Once something is “live looped” can it be rendered or re-recorded as a regular track sample?

unless they drop a surprised new proper model eek

Does the sp-16 pitch its samples across the 16 step buttons like the model samples does?

Another question for power users: now solid is the SP’s clock timing? Should I have it be the master in my Elektron setup or the slave?
