From where
I own a SP-16 and TR-8S, and used them in tandem for many months years ago as my primary drum machine setup. Overall, they work well together, and present different pros and cons. Due to the poor sample management and lack of song mode on the TR-8S, I found the SP-16 to be an excellent companion for sampled drums and establishing a basic song foundation. The TR-8S was very handy for live improvisation.
With that said, I tend to use either the Elektron Rytm MKII, Akai MPC Live MKII or NI Maschine+ for drums these days.
I did a Google searchā¦and this offer popped up: Pioneer DJ Toraiz SP-16 + Schutzabdeckung - SAMPLER & RECORDER - DJ-Technik.de
Get a 2% discount when pay upfront and with āGoogle12ā get another 12ā¬ discount.
It seems in a lot of German stores, the SP16 is still available. Ppl want to sell them here for around 750-850 s/h, so I decided to get one new.
I sold mine for Ā£500 a few months back. Seemed thatās was all anyone was willing to pay at the time. Really good machine, I just didnāt have space for it
So now you want an ARmk2?
I think the SP16 is superior sound wise.
I think the mc707 would be better with the SP16 as you could sample the synths as well.Remember the SP needs to be fed material as its only a stripped back sampler and sequencer/FX.
I sold quite a lot of gear a few months back as I was moving house but the move fell through so Iām looking at replacing what I had. I did think about buying the SP-16 again but Iāve always wanted to try a Rytm. I also sold my TR-8S so donāt currently have a dedicated drum synth. Iām actually not sure what to get at this point.
I have to be honest, I donāt like the internal analog engine of the rytm , I use mostly samples and for this reason i think the SP16 would be better if you just need samples
Plus the amazing sound and the creamy Dave Smith filters are really the advantage here - yes the Elektron sequencer is superior but sound wise not
My original plan was to sample Sonic Charge Microtonic into the DTā¦wasnāt fun, and the results sounded strange.
Added a Maschine+, but I really disliked the whole UI with the music theory focus and the whole setting up WiFi on the M+ so it could phone home. Soā¦returned.
Replaced M+ with Rytmā¦thinking it would bring me into Microtonic areaā¦stupid meā¦ I forgot that it has the same sampling part as the DT, plus I didnāt care much about the analog Part. Ok returned that too and also finally sold the DT, after three years attempts of trying.
Now today SP16 has landed. Will see how that behaves with some loops from the Patternarium.
good to see the Toraiz SP-16 love. Donāt forget to upgrade your firmware to the latest version (1.5 I think) to unlock live looping and other nice features.
there is a latest in firmwares update 1.6.
Iāve been using the SP-16 for about two months now and I just let my mixes peak around -0db (according to the SP-16 master out meter) and hit that Dave Smith Overdrive pretty hard. It sounds like fucking magic in a box.
What USB flashdrives are compatible? I have a SanDisk 128GB USB3.1 on order. Would that work? Which filesystems are supported? ExFAT I guess?
Iāve used Cruize Glide 16 gig sticks with it w/o problems (which are my go-to USB sticks for DJing). and a 64 gig Leef copper. With the onboard memory thoughā¦good luck filling it up unless you just dumping a shit load of samples on it.
Which I donāt recommend. I started off filling up almost all the 8 gigs of internal memory when I first got the SP-16. Iāve much more inspiration using about half or less of that space for some trusted sample packs and leaving the rest free to sample from where ever and experiment.
Itāll stream from USB just fine like all Pioneer DJ projectsā¦but likeā¦how much space do you need to get the job done lol
Yes thatās true, thatās a good advice. Also the Legowelt samples seem a great start, plus Microtonic and my field recordingsā¦
Yea, that sounds like a solid base to start from. Iāve got like Samples from From Mars 909, 808 and MPC packs + Gold Baby Ghetto Drum Samplers for drums. And then Legoweltās Juno 106, MiniMoog (or is Model D?), and DX7 packs on it. Other than that Iām sampling from YouTube or my other gear
It really does. I was reading that when I was researching it and was a bit sceptical but am massively digging the sound so far. Havenāt been using it for that long either.
The HPF around 9 oāclock Iāve found gives a lovely bump to the low end of a mix
No denying the sound. The sound quality alone is worth the cost of entry.
Iām personally a fan of the FX. For the type of music I enjoy, theyāre perfectly not perfect.
Iām digging the EQ before the Delay. Iām getting some quality techno vibes.
Secretly wish Pioneer was paying attention to this thread and decides invest in some development for the box.
My wish list:
Separate track lengths + odd step lengths
Mutes per pattern
A reverb insert
And for the Slice and Scale buttons to work they do on the DJS. Double clicking takes you to the respective pages
I think they sold off or closed down the Toraiz department/team unfortunately, but yeah just a few more tweaks and this box would be amongst the top samplers on the market.
there is an announcement from toraiz that it has not stopped supporting sp16.there is a thread in the pioneer forum
