Pioneer Toraiz SP-16

like that crazy old wizard Ben used to tell the kids (and droids) when he was picking up fresh diodes at Tosche Station “if you strike gear down, it shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” or something along those lines.

@RhythmDroid i didn’t realize who i was replying to earlier, but I appreciate (and appreciate) your response to and your diplomatic yet truthful take on the situation. “The checkered history of the Toraiz series” could be the title of anything from a VH1 Behind the Music (probably not a thing any more), a mini-series of torrid (toraiz!) docutainment webisodes, or an MBA thesis. Personally, I was hoping the Toraiz brand would become a semi-independent brand of Alpha-Theta/ Noritsu, but all rumors and magic 8-balls say “probably not ever”. But one can dream.

Most interesting and confusing marketing I’ve seen from a company.

thanks for the nice summary, I have been doing this for some … 10-15 years, so… I know  but I do unironically appreciate your post

however I was interested not in general live gig advice, but in SP-16 live gig very specific sound processing…

anyway, thanks! :relaxed:

There are no future firmware updates on deck, sorry.

Dude works for Pioneer, he probably has heard his share of grief about it.

I’d love to see an update, but yeah… :sob:

I’m considering buying the SP-16 and letting go of my recently acquired Octatrack Mk2.

I know that in the long run it’s probably a bad idea, but I’m a beginner and the OT is really overkill for me. I haven’t got much time for making music and the SP-16 seems much easier to digest.

There are only a couple of things holding me back:

  1. I am a bit suspicious of touchscreens… I am afraid that the machines with touchscreen might have a shorter lifespan.

  2. Sequencing external gear: I would really love to get a Vermona Drm1 later on. Will the SP-16 be good enough for the job?
I’ve read it sucks at melodic sequencing, but how does it fare for sequencing a drum synth?

Thanks for your help

They’re both great machines. Lots of different artists use these machines to make really good music.

I have both and the SP-16 is way more immediate than the OT. But the OT does things the SP just can’t like odd numbered step lengths.

But if I had to sell either one, I’d sell the OT.

The DJS-1000 is basically the same work flow as the SP

All I can say about touch screens from Pioneer DJ is that I’ve had their cheapest XDJ media players (basically CDJs) for years…had them at outdoor festivals and they are fine.

I just wanna say we tested the SP-16 as a MIDI slave (to Multiclock - a standalone hardware midi clock), and it worked flawless. I keep reading how bad this is when not a master, but my experience was different.

Yep, just set all the inputs to “line” and you’re good to go.

It can easily sequence drums, only thing you have to remember coming from the Elektron way is no independent track lengths and no probability/trig conditions. And 1-16 can be either a midi or sample track, but not both as far as I know.
Also, it actually rules for melodic sequencing, easy to set the pads to a scale, transpose etc.

Hi guys, I am almost never using the MASTER/SEND internal effects. Do you use it? And how?
I was now thinking about trying out the compressor on the master 2bus output, but I am a compression noob, so I could make it sound worse very likely… Also I was thinking about the distortion, that I generally like a lot in the SP-16, also I was considering using the 2-way EQ for some final EQ touches, but again, I could only mess it up, pretty likely.

You won’t mess anything up. Just twist the knobs until it sounds good.

I love the eq.

I don’t personally use them often because I render my arrangement to finish and mix in my DAW but I have played with most of the master/send FX and they are at least very usable/utilitarian.

If you have good gain staging you shouldn’t really NEED the master compressor.

As for the EQ that could be useful to get a big low end under control, aid air, scoop the mids a little.

And I second that you can’t really mess anything up, if it doesn’t sound good just turn it off. If recording a live performance I typically leave the use of master FX for my DAW so I can have a really good listen to what they are doing to the track. If you are performing live in front of people I think most people understand that is just going to be a little more raw than a recording.

I’ve used the reverb most often since there are no insert FX reverbs.

I’m not trying to record live but I just render my arrangements at the track level and load the .wav files in my DAW.

Yesterday I had the chance of trying the DJS-1000 for a few minutes. I don’t have much experience, but I was impressed by the quality of the pads. They feel very nice.

Are the SP-16’s pads just as good?

I’m honestly not a finger drumming person and I don’t feel qualified to answer on pad quality in general. I’ve mostly used my SP-16 for composing and sequencing/recording my other gear so far. I have also never tried the DJS-1000.

I can only speak from my experience and say that while using the SP-16 the pads have never specifically frustrated me–I do use slices quite often and will work out a sequence of slices or will work out a beat on the pads before laying down the triggers on the step sequencer. I’ve not really had double triggers or mis-triggers in those situations.
