YMO Technodelic is one of the best albums ever made I think, possibly my favourite electronic album… had a roadtrip around Ireland years ago and it was the only CD we listened to the whole time! RIP.

His collaboration with David Sylvian is as resonant today as it was nearly twenty years ago. This was my first exposure to Sakamoto’s work, one of those rare songs that completely captured my attention when I first heard it and today one of my favorite songs of all time.

This is really sad news, even with the knowledge of his health problems it still feels like a massive shock. Like many of you, I have lots of really warm memories associated with his music. This version of Castalia is simply sublime…

The track (from 1980!) that changed everything for me

I used to bump this on my yellow Sony sports boom box as a teenager back in '85

This is very sad news. Ryuichi Sakamoto was an extraordinary musician. I saw him perform a concert called Insen with Alva Noto in 2006, which really left a mark. He also had a dignified quality that commanded a certain sort of reverence.

Been a fan since the early 90s when that YMO remix album came out with 808 state / the orb / etc. I delved into all his stuff since then.

I also saw him with YMO at the Hollywood Bowl (with Towa Tea DJ-ing too!) in 2012…

RIP…

Hope he’s enjoying a beautiful voyage after providing so many for us. What a loss man, wow. RIP

RIP. This was sort of expected given his condition for the past few years but still devastating nonetheless. Async resonated with me a lot. That motion graphics remix track is incredible, it was on death love + robots as well

And don’t forget the V.I.R.U.S series with alva noto too. They’re insenly good

This really got to me.
I was sort of trying to prepare for it, since he’s been having health issues for years now… very sad.
He could unlock emotional spaces in me like no one else.

The Wings of Honneamise soundtrack does not seem to be mentioned in any of the tribute/obituaries floating around.

This movie was about some guys training to be the first astronauts on their world, which is a world that looks like it could be an alternate version of our Earth, depicting a civilization/culture with a fascinating mix of elements familiar to us and more exotic ones. I guess the film stuck with me because on the one hand there’s the exotic scifi side, yet on the other hand the story of guys trying to achieve the seemingly impossible while being laughed at is relatable.
