Just recently started managing a library focused completely on media creation and maker space technology. We have 3D printers, a laser cutter, embroidery machine, as well as a music studio and video studio. Thereā€™s more stuff too but those are the main things. Itā€™s part of Houston Public Library, so if youā€™re a Houstonian itā€™s pretty great way to get free access to all these tools.

So, what do I do?

My employer sent an email the other day to all staff. Employees may be subject to disciplinary action for advocating either for or against masking. Context: my school district is dropping the requirement of mask-wearing (while quietly acknowledging the public health communityā€™s standing recommendation to mask indoors).

That begs the question: Is there any more blatant advocacy for masking or not-masking than wearing or not-wearing a mask?

So, what do I do?

I could both wear the mask and not wear the mask to show how ā€œbalancedā€ I am. I could also ā€œsort ofā€ wear the mask, down at the chin (you know what Iā€™m talking about). Or, to be politically correct, I could wear the mask while addressing anyone wearing a mask, and remove the mask when addressing anyone not wearing a mask.

This is going to be so much fun!

ahhh, I remember academic probation like it was yesterday. It took me 8 years to get my BAā€¦ I had undiagnosed ADHD (and wouldnā€™t uncover it for another 20 years). Hang in there bud.

I was a geotechnical engineer (think a mixture of geology and civil engineering) for 20 years but took redundancy at the start of covid so I could properly look after the kids with home schooling, etc and support my wife as she has only recently qualified as a primary school teacher. Now I do amazon deliveries part time, and part time house husband. Iā€™m quite a simple chap and have basically gone from hating my job, to loving what I do and couldnā€™t be happier! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Moved to Finland from Sweden in the end of januari. Feels like an upgrade in most of things besides the bureaucracy.
Moved further north, to a smaller town, closer to nature.
Work with similar stuff as i did in Sweden (pickling, chemicals and that kind of industrial stuff)

This was last night right outside our placeā€¦.feeling lucky/humble.

Hydrographic Field Specialist, focusing on wastewater flow surveys. Disgusting work but also technically interesting and the outdoorsy physical aspect is good for the soul.

Working confined space, especially in the heat, is a real bitch though so Iā€™ll be looking to change roles in 2-3 years. Career prospects at this company look pretty fkng decent for that sort of thing.

(Canā€™t remember if I already said this here or elsewhere only to delete again. Went through a phase of deleting comments & hiding threads for a while, which is prolly a whole separate discussion)

This year I went from teaching at a charter school to working for the cities school district teaching feom home. All day long I teach American History and get to blow kids minds about stuff that isnā€™t in their text books. Itā€™s pretty cool. I use Youtube comments that say things like ā€œnever learned that at schoolā€ to push me in finding ways to bring American history to life for these kids. Was so proud of them when we had a school assembly regarding Mexican Independence Day and my students where slaying the questions. May not pay well, but is sure has made me feel good inside for the past 14ish years.

Iā€™m a disabled veteran who finally went through enough therapy to finally use my GI Bill at 45.

Canā€™t afford a 4 year school, so Iā€™m stacking Associates Degrees. I got one in Physical Sciences, and also Fine Arts.

Iā€™m now working on an Applied Science in Digital Media.

Been making music for almost a year now. It started when I got an M1 MacBook Pro.

It came with an education bundle that included Logic. Whelp. I decided to get my first Synth. A DFAM.

God help me. It definitely wasnā€™t my last.

I am a product owner and administrator of two IT systems. One finance ERP and one DMS for digitalising incoming bills. Second system I am building up as a project owner.

Iā€™d love to be bored againā€¦ used to make music in working hours. Now I donā€™t have enough day to get my work done.

At the same time Iā€™m writing my bachelorā€™s thesis about productiveness in regards to New Work. So stuff like work life balance and free time are topics. My work life feels kind of ā€œhypocriticalā€ :yum:

Hahaa! Iā€™ve told this in numerous other threads already, but letā€™s update my profession in this thread too.

It was good to read the thing I wrote three years ago about wanting to be a librarian as a year after that I bought myself a second hand bookstore and now I basically do what I dreamt of doing back then. I fulfilled my dream which is something that does not happen too often in peoplesā€™ lifetimes.

Iā€™ve had the shop now for close to two years and I love it. There are certain anxiety inducing aspects in running your own business and employing yourself. For example a week ago I was struggling to pay my own salary because we had had a couple of huge tax-related expenses out of the blue. I got it paid anyway and now weā€™re on the right track towards christmas sales. Running a small business with a couple of employees is like steering a ship in rocky waters. Sometimes you manage to go smoothly for a long while but more often youā€™re avoiding crashing and sinking only by chance and good luck. Iā€™m a happy captain, although sometimes I still lose my sleep over it.

The things that bother me is that just running the basic business and cleaning up the huge storerooms filled with records and comics is taking up all my time and my dream was to have gigs and happenings in my shop. Thereā€™s not enough hours in a day to manage everything myself and thereā€™s not enough money to hire someone else to do it for me.

Still, loving every single second of it.
