Standalone Maschine+

For all its present-day limitations, I’m guessing Machine+ will outlive most new laptops purchased in 2020, unless there is some fatal flaw in the design or manufacture of the product.

All the Windows laptops I’ve worked with had to be replaced every 2-3 years. Granted, these were company issued laptops, and took an unknown amount of abuse before being handed to me. I tried to take care of them but they didn’t last long.

My Mac laptops tend to last about 6-7 years until the motherboard/fan/whatever fails.

My Octatrack is still going on fairly strong, already longer lived than any laptop I’ve had.

I know my workflow. I like to make something using hardware and then work with it in my daw. and I like to keep these two stages separate.

MPC Live doesn’t run Windows, it runs Linux

I think there is some false equivalency going on here.

Where as the OT, M+, MPC One, etc. are more akin to desktop computers than laptops. (my desktops last 8-10 years)
No giant lithium ion battery generating heat, no compact design that requires dual fans to keep temps regulated, no daily unfolding of the hinge, reconnecting peripherals, etc.

I get what you’re saying, though.
And I hope my OT lasts another 10 years too!

I’m on my OT all day, the last thing I want to do when I get home is check email!

Wifi like the M+ would be cool tho!

I’m sure there are plenty of people who look at this device this way, but I’m actually looking at this thing from a different angle. I think it looks like a stellar groovebox.

I have found, through trial and error, that the modern MPC’s are not for me, and same with the Roland MC-707. This Maschine+ looks like it could be up my alley as groovebox, with the option to put the finishing touches on a project using a computer. I always have some sort of a groovebox or two around. Sometimes they are complimentary, sometimes they are the centerpiece. My first one was the orange beast, the Roland D2, many years ago. This looks like it could fit the bill for me.

So it does, I thought I heard from a video when it was first announced that they loaded windows on them.

Guess memory really is bolagna

True, I read and post to this forum from an iMac (desktop), lol.

But my tendency is to compare to laptops because even in this pandemic era, I still think about “do I want to use this live”.

I tend to move very slowly when it comes to the decision-making process on standalone devices like M+, so I’ll wait and see what questions get answered over time - like whether it can load Reaktor patches, FM8 patches, etc. I would also have to do some research as I’m not familiar with out sequencing works on Maschine, and other Maschine-specific workflow(s)

You’re right - the original prototype was running Windows CE

will we see a lot of AR and OT on second hand market…?
let’s watch this space I would say

You won’t see my OT on the 2nd hand market, that’s for sure.

My interest in M+ or other grooveboxes has nothing to do with wanting to replace my OT.

People who say this can replace an OT have not worked much with an OT. The OT is its own thing. People have already been comparing OT to MPC and similar grid pad devices for years. I’ve tried repeatedly to help them understand, but nothing works as well as direct experience for yourself.

my heart aches when someone sells their OT

My question with Maschine+ is this - how deep can you go in regards to editing/tweaking Massive/FM8 etc “in the box” LOL. 8 macro knobs doesn’t take you very far, unless they’ve made some tweaks to the software…

I doubt it. Elektron products excel at being very focused, streamlined products. The Maschine+ is very different in that regard. I just don’t see them being the same at all. But man, if you had an AR, and a Maschine+, then fed those into the OT, now we’re cooking with space gas.

You have multiple pages of Macro knobs - some have 64 different controls

I wonder if it’s possible to connect an external soundcard to get individual outs.

I sure hope so. It would be a great way to expand the ins and outs with the usb host ports.
