Update Analog Rytm MK2

Largely because of the dedicated i/o ports and analog synthesis power that DT can’t compete with. I’m not trying to belittle you or sound snarky but if you mainly want a sampler then trading the Rytm for Digitakt might be your best bet

I’m new to AR (and only a casual DT user) so I was unaware that it has the same core sampling engine as it’s cousin. Hopefully that’ll make it easier to port the improvements but who knows if/when that may happen.

More like laziness imo. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The AR MK2 has a lot of potential to update it via firmware.

Does anyone know if the Rytm hardware can support these possible new features? CPU etc?

There were theories the AR was almost maxed out cpu-wise, but I’ve read the same about the DT 2 years ago…

I think every elektron gears released are at max CPU.
The last DT update is just automations and shortcuts to make things that can already be done before (with some tricks and workaround)
If any AR update come, don’t expect stereo sampling or real timestretch.
They can in theory bring the same feature as DT by just changing a bit the UI and some precalculated start point on samples.
Not sure they want to, as the Analog Rytm is more focus to be an analog drum synth, the sampling look like a bonus. Hope I’m wrong.

I don’t really get it either. at least they could have given us the dimming of the lights back then. The fact is now that both analog are totally neglected - even if something comes up again at some point.

in the end it’s all about the sales figures, but you can understand that. the small boxes are affordable and i’m sure they sell three times as many as the analog ones. many do not like the analog ones.

well, what the heck. one thing is clear. the two boxes are and remain amazing. the updates are not a must for elektron and therefore it is not to be blamed on them.

Honestly. The more I think about it. I personally believe the Analogs will get an OS update.

What I don’t see being talked about in the Digitakt 1.5 thread. Is how they are rewriting the code for the Digitakt to make it more efficient, therefore being able to make these changes and update the Digi line so that it’s all one eco system of code with Machines inside the machine.
This gives them the ability to update that line without having to make a new machine. Personally I think this is amazing. It’s amazing that they decided instead of abandoning it we will rewrite the code.

I think the Analogs will be the same. But I guarantee that rewriting the analogs code to be more efficient is a pretty big undertaking. It may not be a timeline that we all can agree on. They could have thought of the new direction awhile ago but to rewrite code in an 6-7 year product to keep it pushing along , and pushing in a new direction is damn amazing.

I mean all this is speculation which is the worst. But from this update. I am a true believer in elektron and no longer I’m I questioning what is going on at elektron. Im content to sit back and enjoy what they bring us and how they go about doing it.

I also think this is the case. I have this vague memory that it was mentioned a number of new engineers came on board “recently” (I’m not about to go digging for that information, so take this for what you will). Who knows: they might be rehauling the entire code. The hardware is the only permanent thing about any of these boxes.

Go ahead call me desperately hopeful idgaf.

Even though the AR is a analog drum machine, it is also explicitly a sampler as well! (And a melodic synth). This side deserves some updates I think.

Really hope @nittygritty is right… they could give these machines a second life with some updates or even new machines.

Has anyone noticed or heard of the CPU being maxed out or close? It seems super slick and fast in everything I’ve done with mine but appreciate I don’t push that hard CPU wise.

Back in the days of yore Cenk claimed it was maxed out and there would be nothing new. And then they released a whole mess of new.

So I doubt a statement on the state of the CPU will ever be made again.

No its not like that.

As in its CPU maxing out isn’t based on what i do? Don’t understand what you mean. @sseemmii

It could be hardware limit perhaps? In any case, I’m happy with my AR MK2 and it’s a fantastic drum synth. Not much out there can really beat it right now. Sure, Perkons and few others like Jomox Alphabase and Modor are close but they don’t have as powerful sequencer and ease of use in many ways like the Rytm. I’m dreaming of a Machinedrum remake now that would be awesome!

What i mean is like it doesn’t get problems with cpu like the mpc one, maschine+ or ableton. İt doesnt slow down or glitch because of the cpu or from heavy sound programming. If i understood your post correctly.

The more I wait for this update the more I feel like I can actually just get what I really want. Haven’t really glued with most of the engines. Samples sound great and when applicable it’s great to layer with the synth.

But there’s no point holding on to something you don’t like. And yes, you can make the point that limitations are good for creativity, or that everything is what we make of it, or what’s the point of anything, ever. But it’s my shit. It’s what I like or don’t.

There’s probably people who feel that the finishing touches will make the greatest drum machine, but I think there’s some people like me, too. Holding out, hoping it will become this whole other thing. I think, for some, it’s better to stop waiting.

Yeah totally, it seems solid, like super fast. Feels like plenty of space to do stuff. I mean old Akai have loads of stuff going on and slow up but super old. Be very surprised if Elektron put low power processing in their machines, wouldn’t make any sense.

Very hopeful we will get an update soon.

There is definitely thing which can be added and which does not cpu time or near 0.
For example :

  • fixed slice without 0 crossing
  • pad note according to a given scale
  • sample length instead of start/end, could be a new toggle

Things which might never came because of cpu limitation :

  • second lfo
  • digital filter
  • portamento
