soundtrack/nostalgia takes priority for me, a lot of stuff from childhood in the 00āsā¦ no order:
Faster than Light - fun space game, Ben Pruntyās soundtrack is great. Bleeps and bloops that inspire me to this day.
Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) - from space battles to lightsaber duels and all the chaos in between, this game has more features than most modern shooters. Has it aged well? Not reeeallly
Halo 3 & Halo Reach - iconic soundtracks by Martin oāDonnell. fun map editors, the custom games with friends was chaos in the best of ways. OG servers went down recently, very sad.
Gears of War 3 - my dad would play this with me, idk how the old man was ok chainsawing folks in two but there was some wholesome father-son bonding taking place. Last good game of the franchise
Dark Souls III - a tough choice between the first and third of this franchise. While I donāt think it has the soul of the original, thereās more replay value for 3, and the PVP is ok.
Super Smash Brothers Melee - got very invested late highschool / college. A dedicated community has kept this game alive 20+ years, its fun to spectate the competitive scene.
Minecraft - I like the soundtrack(C418), I like the gameplay, I donāt like the community that has grown around it.
Rock Band - for kids in middle school, this was great. It hasnāt aged well at all, but for itās impact on me growing up, Iām including it.
Castle Crashers - fun and lighthearted game, strangely my childhood introduction to SoundCloud. One of the contributing musicians had his old music on Newgrounds, but his more recent work had migrated to Soundcloud. Through him I found an active community of independent artists, and the positive vibes around that encouraged my first steps towards electronic music making.
Honorable mentions:
Windows XP Pinball - weāve all played it
Dark souls 1 - the OG
Borderlands 2 - well written story
Breath of the Wild - the freedom to climb things is truly incredible
Hades - good sountrack, like the gameplay loop
Halo 2 & Halo ODST, best soundtracks in Halo franchise. not my favorite games tho

Metal Gear Solid 4 ( all of them really, I just really love the style of 4.)
Kingdom Hearts series.
Iām a sucker for beautiful landscapes and design. I also love any game that offers the freedom all of these do.
Yeah in particular the Arbiter level in H2 music is great, and ODST soundtrack really emphasises the feeling of loneliness in a deserted futuristic city in the rain.
I used to like to get really high and play āFlowerā.
That was a wicked long time ago, like 2009 or so.
After a while, if my Wife felt like I had been playing it too long, she would say,
āAre you still tripping balls in a Thomas Kinkade painting?ā
That usually meant she wanted to play one of the āFalloutā games.
