Looks like a very capable performance sampler, and I think the price point is, well, on point.
No time-stretching (boo!), or polyphony (just sample chords!)…but hey, Novation are known for their post release support, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that these features will be added in future updates.
Looks cool. Won’t be for me, but I can totally see why someone would go for this.
However, what keeps puzzling me is that Novation has a killer concept in the Circuit. As grid boxes go, it’s totally unique. And they’re not shy to release high end products like the Summit and stuff.
Yet, their Circuit line-up remains on this fairly basic level. They would kill if they aimed higher.
Or maybe they wouldn’t, and it’s at this price point where the market’s at, and they know that.
I preordered at Thomann (delivery in 5-7 weeks).
I think the form factor is great, it’s battery powered and I hope it will be a nice little machine to make some chill beats on the couch or the balcony while sampling random shit from my phone
Slicing looks workable but I wish they’d take inspiration from Ableton’s Simpler slice function that works by transient detection and a sensitivity knob. In conjunction with Push2 it’s the best slicing implementation on any sampler I know of.
It samples, which is surely a huge plus point at this price. I don’t see it giving the SP much hassle because SP users are fiercely loyal muscle memory masochists, and the SP has the kind of character that inspires that loyalty, even if it falls short on a number of features. But it’s probably a decent threat to anything under £400 that doesn’t actually sample, and likely a bit of a thorn for the Digitakt too. I’d still take the DT’s screen and sequencing pedigree, but £250 isn’t chump change…
I used to own a Circuit OG. Got it when it came out. It was a lot of fun, back then I hardly knew anything about synths. Only messed around with grooveboxes and samplers.
It was my gateway drug into a lot of gear.
Now I am happy that I let go my Circuit Tracks, yes the 32 steps instead of the 16 are cool.
Yes the 2 midi channels are cool.
Yes the 2 audio inputs are cool…for a beginner or intermediate user that has limited space and I/O available.
I am glad I got in on the last preorders of the M8 and I will not regret the journey that the Circuits got me through, but unless I were to give a Circuit Tracks to my son, I wouldnt have kept it anyways.
It’s a shame the external audio isn’t routed through fx, but I think this is a reasonable iteration of the circuit hardware …
I have other boxes so I won’t be buying one ( I had an og circuit) …
I expect it’ll be successful and maybe get a few interesting updates in the performance fx dept …
The sequencer and general workflow is the result of years of iteration so I wouldn’t expect any major updates in that dept.
I would not expect ( via firmware)
Sample streaming
Audio over usb
Stereo samples
More polyphony
Time stretching
You can probably record macro controls , you could on old circuit and can on new circuit
You could either live record them in or hold the step and tweak the knobs.
