Novation Circuit Rhythm and Circuit Tracks

last week picked up a second model samples to make it a pair, it’s hard to go back after you go model samples or takt

It takes time to evaluate any hardware generically speaking, I wish there was an option were I could actually test for a week and then decide were to buy it or not, Actually different from my MC 707 ( again I love it but will switch to an MC 101 as I love portability ) the Rhythm can record more than one channel at once ( from external sequencer like a DAW ) which is a PLUS for me

Yep. Don’t tell anyone, but I’m back on the Digitakt again. The damn thing keeps pulling me back in.

On the rhythm? I have 3 packs set already… it gives you the choice of pressing,on an empty project pad…

Has anyone checked the programmers manual? I was highly surprised to see that
a) there is a lot of things to modify via midi cc’s such as the resonance of the master filter and all the grid fx parameters
b) There is a whole list of not-implemented features in there like LFO’s, waveforms and more. It looks almost a bit to good to be true, maybe they messed up and mixed it with the programming reference of the circuit tracks??

See here https://fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/downloads/Circuit%20Rhythm%20Programmer's%20Reference%20Guide%20v1.01.pdf

You got me curious, and so when you look at the Programmers Guide for the Circuit Tracks you’ll see a number of similarities but the Oscillator Waveform and Filter Table make much more sense in the context of the Circuit Tracks. It’s made think that the Circuit Tracks in combination with a Digitakt for controlling those midi CC’s would give a much more in depth programming experience of the Circuit Tracks without using a computer…

I have messed around with it. Yeah, a lot of it is Circuit Tracks stuff. Synth 1 and 2 and all that.

The resonance on the master filter is nice, works well over MIDI, and I hope becomes accessible on the machine in a firmware update. I also had no problem controlling the grid fx from my Digitone. But again, this should be something you can do without an external controller.

Also, as far as I know, you’re not able to create or edit presets over anything but Components. For example, in my last video on the Rhythm I used my Digitone to dial in just the right amount of digitize and vinyl that I wanted. I think if sounded great and I was very happy with it. I also didn’t see any way to save those as presets.

But yeah, in general, I think that a lot more needs to be available to control on the machine itself. And I don’t think it would be that hard to work out because even with the grid fx, with any given effect there are less than 8 parameters to edit.

On a more frustrating note, I can’t speak for the Tracks but the ccs for things going on in individual tracks are kind of messed up on the Rhythm. You can definitely use the ccs to set up your track but if you want to parameter lock things, even things like filter cutoff, it’s just not going to work out. I’ve tried sending the message ahead of the step and it just doesn’t really work like you’d think it should. I think I’m going to eventually make a video about it. It bothers me. And I don’t understand why it responds the way it does.

Weirdly enough, I didn’t have a problem sequencing the fx track from my Digitone.

But I’ll be the first to admit that maybe I’m just doing it wrong. If not, I hope that gets worked out.

Hey Folks,

Thought I’d better pop up and let you know that indeed there is an error in the Programmers Reference guide for Circuit Rhythm in that page 10 and also the LFO table on page 11 is actually referencing Circuit Tracks.
We’re aware of it over at Novation and will be updating the Programmers Reference at some point hopefully in the near future.
Sorry for any confusion on that!

Don’t tell that Calc  nice device btw…

No apologies required, in fact the error in the manual might even have sold a Tracks as I’m curious about programming the synth parts via midi. If you were to make some changes from the DT via midi CCs, is there anyway those changes would be remembered? Like by saving the project for example? Or would they be lost on changing patch or project?

Welp…doesn’t look the SP404MK2 will be here until the new year…so this little piece of kit is going to have to fill in the void for me :stuck_out_tongue:

Really nice piece you have here. Inspiring man. :two_hearts:

Thanks! I appreciate that. Also, I should say that depending on how you’re using that ipad, the Rhythm might wind up being a better fit. Whatever you’re doing with the MIDI, the 404 probably can’t do it.

Well i have 45 days to figure that out  i love Guitar Centers return policy. But whom i fooling. I love this thing. Hahah

So timely:

I think I’m going to cancel my order for the SP404 after watching this. I’m really happy with the Rhythm so far and think it will fit the way I work. I am a huge fan of Step Sequencers…

FWIW, I am able to get Midi from the Knobs to work and control CC mapped controls on the iPad. So…this is gonna be cool to combine it with iPad synths and effects as well. So far I am having a blast with it and Drambo

So I’ve come up with my wishlist of features I’d like to see on this thing.
Improvements:

  • For a step it should be possible to have a longer gate length than just 16 steps. AFAIK there are no options to make it longer than 16 even if you are in a 32-step pattern.
  • Pads that have no sample assigned should be unlit when in sampleview
  • While in the mixer it be great to have the pads light up white whenever a step is being triggered/played. That way you can get a better impression which part has what assigned without having to mute around in order to check.

Feature requests:

  • Grid FX edit mode (pleeeeazzze!). I imagine it like this: when you are in the grid fx view, the now empty 3rd row of pads could have it’s most left button assigned to toggle this mode. Once on you can press on any of the gridfx pads. The macros will then turn to the color assigned to the effect. You can then use the 8 to change the parameters of your preset and save it if you want.
  • Vinyl sim needs a ‘flutter’ parameter if wants to compete with the SP’s

The Grid fx have received some criticism in reviews over their quality.
Personally I find them not bad at all. However they are really the type of fx where hitting the sweet spot is essential, which again can be very different depending on what you’re working on. Thus we NEED onboard grid fx-editing :))
Would be cool if @Calc could pass this on !
