Novation Circuit Rhythm and Circuit Tracks

But you can run Chrome on iOS? Right?

Yep but Chrome for iOS is different to Chrome for MacOS and different to Chrome for Windows or Android. So, webMIDI works in Chrome (and Opera) on all the platforms except iOS.

So there is hope that if you are on Android it could work for you using Chrome. No such luck for iPhone or iPad users.

I haven’t done it for years, but I have been able to save and change packs for the original circuit from an android phone. At the time the only thing you couldn’t do was create a pack of samples as this relied on dragging and dropping files. Again, this was several years ago so who knows now.

Happy New Year all - a little dark hip hop beat I made and jammed whilst watching the darts:

So this is a cool combination.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 7 are the drums and bass. They’re on the Rhythm. Track 4 is controlling the sample chops on Koala. And track 8 is controlling Koala’s fx.

And if you didn’t already know, if you hit shift in pattern view you can jump patterns. It’s funny because this is something I’ve always wanted on the Digitakt. But I either completely missed it or just plain forgot the Rhythm has it.

So here’s a thing that I figured out you can do with the beat repeat.

I’ve got one pad that’s 100% dry. I’m using that one to pick a choose and hold it. I then bring in the repeat whenever I feel like it. But instead of repeating what just played, it repeats the part I chose.

Well this is starting to happen in a big way and i love it. Knobs+Pads+Synths+Chords+Drums+Samples+Loops

I quite like the Circuit Rhythm, it’s very hands-on, easy to get stuff going. One thing that is a pity is the quality of the pads LEDs… I posted a few weeks back a picture which I sent to Novation and they said it seems within the margin… but look at this one below, you can hardly tell them apart.

A couple of suggestions for future firmware (I’m not 100% you can’t do it already):

  • Shift + Knobs 1 - 4 would allow changing the volume, panning, reverb and delay
  • View Lock for Micro Step/Probability/etc so that you can tweak fluidly the same domain for different tracks
  • Color customization for the pads (currently there are too many blue hues)
  • Post record quantise
  • When selecting a new project, after clicking the pad, the color should switch. It’s very hard to tell right now, since the pad stays red and the intensity slightly fluctuates

I think my unit has an issue with the Master Filter, it only show’s grey (what I assume would be 0) when it’s slightly to the left, not in the physical center position. Anyone else experiencing this?

I haven’t seen that with the filter on my Rhythm. But I also haven’t been paying much attention to that so I’ll keep an eye on it.

And while I’m not sure I’m on board with all of your suggestions, I really really really like the idea of customization.

For example, I’m really enjoying that you can do pattern jumping if you hit shift in pattern view. But in that view the knobs don’t do anything and you can’t get back into tracks without hitting shift again. It’d be nice to be able to change that kind of thing around. I don’t think most people would care about that but I would. And it would be cool to be able to set that up in Components.

@Calc I understand you’re the same Calc from Novation, so I’ve signed up here with the hope you might see this message before I make a purchase. I’ve watched a whole bunch of videos on the Circuit Rhythm (including your own), and I’ve not seen a single EQ, not per sample, not per track, and not even a Global EQ - nothing.

I’m purely hardware based and need the device to be able to develop complete tracks, but without an EQ, it’s just not doable and unfortunately the filters per track are no substitute for an EQ. At the very least the device needs a master EQ so that we can at least do our tweaks and then resample it back into an EQ’d sample.

So my question is: Do Novation plan to add a Global EQ to the Circuit Rhythm?

A few other really weird things is there is no Isolator among the grid effects, and the Vinyl Sim effect feels a bit lacklustre and doesn’t have enough parameters. Vinyl Sim should at least have separate control for Wow and Flutter since they are two different things.

My major issue is the lack of an EQ though, it’s such an issue that I cannot buy the Circuit Rhythm unless it has one (or is at least scheduled to get one).

I suppose you cannot say so even if you knew it was getting one. But if so, can you at least give a rough estimate when the next Firmware Update will be?

It’s really frustrating because in all honesty I think I prefer the Circuit Rhythm over the SP-404MKII anyway, but without an EQ it’s absolutely out of the question, it needs an EQ, prefereably a Parametric Master EQ, it even has the right amount of knobs for a 3-Band EQ with a Sweepable Mid (which would be perfect on the Master Output and could therefore be resampled).

I’m not sure what it is with Novation and EQ’s, but even on the Circuit Tracks, the Synth is locked out from assigning the Synth EQ Paramaters to the Macros knobs. I mean they’re there, so why do that? Regardless, for that simple reason I lost interest in the Tracks, but would change my mind if they fixed it since it’s an important sound sculpting tool.

Do you use a mixer? Does it have an EQ?

I have a mixer but I’m updating my rig and want to be able to EQ inside the Groovebox itself. I wouldn’t even need a mixer if I could do that. The SP-404MKII has EQs galore but I’d still go for the Circuit Rhythm if they added an EQ. I’d also buy a Circuit Tracks to pair-up with it if they removed that limitation of not being able to ‘Macro-Knob’ the Synth EQ parameters.

Buy an SP

Well, that’s probably what will end up happening unless I know to do otherwise. I’m hoping either @Calc can reveal something or that the next Firmware Update comes before the SP-404MKII is in stock, and that it fixes these shortcomings (at least the EQ stuff).

Much as I want both the Tracks and the Rhythm, unless those EQ issues are dealt with (as in a Master EQ on the Rhythm and making the Synth EQ available to the Macro Knobs on the Tracks), then they’re not suitable. I really like both devices other than those deal-breaker (for me) issues.

Like other said if you got eq on a mixer that is better, hope there’s an update for the rhythm but it is complete as it is…

I beg to differ, a groovebox without a single EQ on board does not feel “complete” to me, it feels the opposite. I mean even in “Mixer” mode where you have the expected Volume Level and Pan, there is no EQ there either, I mean why on earth not?

The bare essentials of any mixer function is surely that it contains at least Volume, Pan, and EQ.

The Digitakt and Digitone don’t have eqs. They feel pretty complete to me. I think it would be cool if the Rhythm got an EQ. I also think low and high pass filters per track is plenty and don’t fully understand why you would assume it’s coming or might be coming. And if it were coming, I don’t know why you think Calc would let that slip before it actually comes.

Neither of those are what I would call a “Groovebox” though.

I’m happy for you.

Again I’m happy for you, but personally I need an EQ on board.

I don’t assume it’s coming, that’s why I’m asking about it.

Well hopefully because it’s a Groovebox and it currently lacks an EQ of any description!

I don’t and even said so in my original post, which is why I was hoping he could maybe give us a rough date planned for dropping the next firmware update. Looking at Novation’s track record on the previous Circuit, I very much doubt the new line is considered complete already, Novation are exceptionally good with their Firmware Updates.

But no biggie either way, I’ll just buy an SP-404MKII if I have to, but I do like the Circuits which is why I thought I’d ask about this stuff.

Can’t hurt to ask!
