Let’s get things back on track. I thought this was a nice video showing off things we all love to do:
no, it’s not possible to set the same channel for two synth tracks.
I figured out a thing!
When I got the Rhythm I was annoyed that I couldn’t control things the way I wanted to from my Digitakt. The main thing was that I couldn’t get it to change samples in a sequence even though I was able to change samples when the sequencer wasn’t running. But in the process of trying to document this for the folks at Novation, I made a little breakthrough.
Turns out, you need to send a message with one of the yellow trigs ahead of the note. That part seemed normal enough. That’s how the Digitakt works. But you need to also include the parameter lock to change the sample on the note itself. And then you need to do the same thing to go back to the old sample. Another wrinkle is that the message to change samples interrupts the sample being played so you need to nudge the message all the way to the right. So it’s wonky but it makes sense to me now.
Everything else works more or less the same way I would think it should. The filters respond a little slow but it’s okay. You can get the timing right with the yellow trigs. But I think that I was thinking everything else wasn’t working right because I was trying this all out at once.
So I don’t know if anyone else cares about any of this. But I’m pretty jazzed about it. I haven’t really been combining the Rhythm and the Digitakt other than using the Digitakt as a compressor and a sound card for the Rhythm. But that ends now. The Rhythm can at long last really be my Digitakt’s little buddy like I always wanted.
Really enjoyed this, thanks!
I get around the MIDI channel issue by routing MIDI through my Zoia. That way I get up to 8 note MIDI polyphony.
Finally got round to tidying this Zoia patch up for public consumption. Link to v1 on patch storage below, set up for 4 voice polyphony:
I plan on adding more functionality such as MIDI LFOs and the like.
Does anyone have experience with externally sequenced program changes on the circuit tracks? (eg from Octatrack to change the ‘session’/ ‘project’
I noticed when Circuit tracks and mono station receive ‘program change’ from an external MIDI device, they change instantly rather than waiting until the end of the bar.
Does anyone know if we can change this? or find a workaround?
So like I was saying before, I figured out how to fully control the Rhythm from the Digitakt. While I was working the kinks out I put together this little project.
I took apart some of the beats that I made last month on the Rhythm and put them back together with the Digitakt. The Digitakt is on the drums and triggering the melodic samples on the Rhythm.
What I really like about this set up is that I can sample things quickly into the Rhythm without having to bother with the Digitakt’s filing system. I’ve also got about as much control over my samples on the Rhythm as I would have using the MIDI loopback on the Digitakt. And I really like that I can sequence the master filter as well as the filters for each track. Honestly, while the Digitakt’s filter can obviously do more things I prefer the sound of the resonant low pass on the Rhythm.
Anyway, if you really like it and want to download it there’s a Bandcamp as well.
I think that I also want to put together some tutorials on the Rhythm so if anyone’s got anything they think needs covering I’m happy to do it.
Back with another Rhythm beat:
Lifted some random radio snippets, and other instruments/sounds. Took advantage of the Rhythms probability and mutate (random) sequencer functions:
Beautiful track!! Love it!
Thank-you so much!
Sidechaining the external inputs is still not possible on rythm, right?
Hello
Another trip hop inspired jam. Built around an acoustic guitar sample I found.
Thanks for listening.
Correct
Hi everyone!
I noticed that the " Circuit Rhythm Programmer’s Guide V2" lists several filter types and filter drive (distortion) types ( 0 diode, 1 valve, 2 clipper, 3 cross–over, 4 rectifier, 5 bit reducer, 6 rate reducer ; 0 low pass 12dB, 1 low pass 24dB, 2 band pass 6/\6 dB, 3 band pass 12/\12
dB, 4 high pass 12dB, 5 high pass 24dB).
Mind you, these are the same parameters as in the synth engine of the OG Circuit (and the Tracks probably). Is this an error or is there a way to switch distortion and filter types in the Rhythm? Calc?
This is in the V2 version of the Programmer’s Guide, mind you, with the erroneous references to LFOs that apply only to Tracks removed.
It looks like an error. The only place you’ve even got an option to choose a filter type on the Rhythm, as far as I can tell is on the auto filter. And that’s just high, low, and band pass.
More synth style options would be very cool though.
Another week, another trippy hop Rhythm jam.
Made this for the Hardware Jams Challenge group over on Facebook. All about dreams this week!
Just saw this over on Synthtopia:
My jaw kind of dropped when I saw the “no external effects or processing used“ note. Who knew the old Nova engine could sound like that?
Amazing sounding. Going to try these out tomorrow. Thanks for the link ™
