Does anybody else miss the “nudge function” of the original Circuit? Currently there is no way to move (nudge/rotate) a pattern (per track) a number of steps forward or backward. Awkward for folks with poor timing like me, and also a missed opportunity for experimentation with sliding tracks back and forth to get new grooves.
Impressive videos and songs from fellow Elektronauts on the Novation Rhythm! I’ve read this thread and determined the Novation Rhythm would be a great addition to the studio. I had the original Novation Circuit and this looks like a great and inspiring instrument. I have the new Roland SP-404 MK2. Its fun, fast, and intuitive. However, I miss the step sequencer of the original Circuit. The performance effects sound good and this looks great for live performance. Keep up the great music making and hope to join you all soon with a Novation Rhythm. Cheers!
Unfortunately it’s not in the newer circuits, you can start the pattern on a different step and have it end on an earlier step (e.g start on step 3 and end on step 2), that kind of does the same thing, but the original timing/step position in the pattern doesn’t change.
If you already own an SP-404, wouldn’t it be more cost effective to buy a launchpad pro mk2 or any other decent hardware sequencer?
Thank you for the recommendation. I’ve been building out live sets with the SP404MK2 and a Korg Monologue. The Novation Rhythm looks like it would be great for drums and one shots. All three devices run on batteries and could perform a one hour live set even in a remote area. I’m reviewing all the videos on this thread to get a better idea of its capabilities. There is some inspiring music by the group here on the Novation Rhythm.
I’m putting together some tutorials for the Circuit Rhythm. This time around, I’m talking about parameter locks.
Thanks for making this tutorial. This is exactly what I need to learn. My Novation Rhythm should arrive early next week. I’m diving into all the awesome videos on this thread to learn more. Cheers!
No doubt. I’m going to be doing a little series of these so if you’ve got any questions along the way, let me know. And congrats on your Rhythm
Great demos and tutorials! I’m digging the Rhythm. First impressions are great. I purchased it mainly as a drum machine to accompany a SP404MK2 and Korg Monologue. The step sequencing is fun and easy. Finger drumming is fun and fast. I hope to record a demo soon with all 3 devices integrated into a thundering tidal wave of melody and madness.
Quick question- when you want to alter a sample in sample playback mode, for example, change it from a one shot to a loop or gated, do you have to select each sample and change them individually or is there a “select all” type of option for all samples in that page? Thanks!
Nah, the Rhythm works in tracks. So if you go to the second sample page and set your sample to play in reverse then any sample you play on that track will play in reverse. So that means any sample assigned to the track, as well as any that you’ve locked to your pattern with sample flip.
Thanks @Doug! Makes sense. Everyday I’m finding out a new trick on this beast. Lots more to learn.
I got a circuit rhythm at Christmas, but not really played around with it much. Had a noodle this afternoon with the factory samples.
I like that you can live reload from the projects page after screwing up the pattern and it doesn’t skip a beat doing it, kind of like the reload ptn on the Elektrons.
I hope the rhythm gets an update eventually, especially the grid fx. They’re so great but not as smooth and tight with the timing as I’m thinking it’s capable of…
I had a go with a Rhythm yesterday. I really think this one’s not getting the credit it deserves. Beyond all the mono and limited sample time and stuff, it’s an extremely powerful, rich sounding song writing kit. The convenience and speed to which you can stuff together … I mean, I had an old gen Circuit back in the days and I’d forgotten just how fluent it was as a composer’s tool, once you got to know it.
I can totally see why one would want a pro version of this, but it’s very capable as is, right now.
Yep! It has a couple of flaws, but how it is, just as a drum machine alone is pretty top notch. And I have a deluge sp16 blackbox etc etc.
All great, and this one is great too!
I think it’s pretty strong as an ambient machine as well. I fired up a few pads, threw in the vinyl effect and resampled it all, then pitched the loop down, sliced it up and banged away at the sequencer. That’s SP 404-style kind of workflow, but with an actual proper sequencer to boost.
Made me wonder “Hmmm maybe that 404MK2 might be for me after all …”
Dear lord.
Quick question because I am somewhat new to using samples in my music.
If I am importing a sample via components (say from a third party sample pack), do I need to make sure the sample is in C in order for the chromatic layout to scale correct on the unit?
In other words, if the sample is a one shot in A, would that mess up the chromatic mode?
Thanks!
A sample like that would work okay. You would just need to tune it. So in that case you would just go over to the tune knob and hit shift so that you can pitch by semitones and then pitch your A up to a C. And now the keyboard will be laid out correctly
Great makes sense! Follow up: I’m guessing the default packs are tuned to C so this step is unnecessary?
