The Pioneer is wonderful.
Iāve been checking out the toraiz sp16 a fair bit, I really like the Octatrack, but would like this as it looks very immediate and fast and simple for when you donāt want to mess about, and can use the Octatrack when want to dive deeper and be more creative.
How are people liking it after owning it for while?
Itās a great machine very unique sound (clean and crisp highs with a very tight bottom end) filters are great Unfortunately I got a dude this time around replacement coming this week.
As for ease of use I give it an āAā very inspiring tool with near instant results that put a smile on your face. (I also own on Octatrack MKII)
I would advise buying new from a reputable dealer in case you need to return/exchange
Yeah been reading through the thread seems the sound quality is good, the screen looks big easy to see everything too. Might have to get one eventually.

How is the time stretch? Does it sound as good as ableton or close?
Thatās the only thing on the Octatrack I find not up to scratch
I can get back to you on the time stretch once my new unit comes in. Maybe someone on this thread can chime in @v00d00ppl might be able to speak on that.
I use the time stretching for loops in Ableton and transfer files if needed. To get best results I mostly try to stay in the original bpm.
I personally use time stretching with the SP 16 only within a certain range as I find aliasing to start pretty early. As said, I try to stay in the original tempo. Havenāt made a A/B comparison with the OT, but I think the OT does a better job, but maybe I am wrongā¦
I do the same thing. If I need to timestretch I do the prep work in ableton and bounce to a WAV file I will use on my preferred sampler. Timestretch algorithms are much better on ableton using the Ć©lastique engine and some audio editors have good time stretch engines too. Hardware time stretch engines are best for + or - 10% of original BPM content. So if you have a 120BPM loop the low range is 108 and high is 132 BPM.
This thing seems to be a beast! Just discovered it as I have havent given it much attention when it came out.
Iām looking at it for live looping, transitioning and loading up stems from omnisphere. individual outs seem ace too!
Iāve been avoiding the OT as I have an elektron heavy setup and am looking into some easier and more fun UI.
This together with my md and a bass synth seems to be a good setup for live and jamming.
Anything I need to look out for with the SP16? heard some thing about build etc.
Build is fine in my experience, no issues with that.
Things to bear in mind:
Only 16 samples per scene, 1 per track, a scene is a bank in Elektron terms, i.e 16 patterns. You can use chains to get around it somewhat.
Sampling time is max 8 bars, pattern length max is 4 bars, all tracks have to be same length, no mute memories or mutes in song mode, so for example if you want a section in your song where there are no hi hats then you have to copy a pattern and delete the hihats.
Sound quality is super, fx are ok and quite editable.
If I think of anything else Iāll add later.

Those limitations arenāt that bad for me. Iām used to the scale per track so that might be some getting used to if everything needs to be 4 bars.
Regarding sampling, I might use Live to prep stems and just import them. for live looping 8 bars should be fine. One question though, how does the sp16 handle the start trigger of an 8 bar loop if the max loop length is 4 bars?
Time stretcht is ok I read, if you donāt want to go to extremes. Also is the sample memory sufficient? The numbers donāt really make sense to me. Can projects be stored on the USB drive or is that purely for import/export of samples?
I never use long samples more than 4 bar in mine, so not too sure how it handles 8 bar samples, I guess you need to use 2 patterns to allow it to play fully.
Sample memory and timestretch are sufficient, and yes you can save projects to USB drive.

Iām a 64 or 128 bar samples kind of guy. Tried out the Toraiz in a store for that purpose. Splitting the samples up across scenes worked pretty well and yielded some interesting ideas and results on their own. I couldāve lived with that, but itās the no polyrythm thing that got to me in the end.
But itās clearly not aimed at more experimental or days long jazz improvisation kind of people, so I walked away from it, thinking that damn, it sounds good, damn, itās fun to play with and damn, itās not for me. But itās great all the same.
Sold mine because it felt , and was, limited. Sounded great. Missed opportunity from pioneer. I like the depth of OT, you just have to sample properlies. Sp16 I recorded guitar straight in and sounded really good.
It couldnāt replace my OT but Iām still very tempted when I see them cheap these days.
$690 is what I saw recently.

DJS1000 look more attractive to me.
Lacks the filter, I wonder how it affects the general sound. My filter drive is always on.
At that price would think about a 2nd one
Itās a great machine , sounds fantastic, easy to use , Itās a shame they didnāt put the DS filter on it but wasnāt a deal breaker for me as I can pretty much get there with my mixer on the outs with a bit of drive
